Molly needs help to get justice for her brother.

Her shy neighbor, whom she’s crushed on since high school, Duncan, comes to her aid.

Duncan

Duncan Fielding had a great vantage point to watch the Gravenhurst house. His binoculars sat on his windowsill; his telescope pointed across the street. The object of his obsession stood in her attic window. She’d been in the same spot for over an hour. Her lips moved occasionally, but he never saw anyone else in the window.

What is she doing?

Maybe today would be the day Duncan stopped making excuses and checked on her.

For the past year, ever since he and Damian bought a house on her block, Molly had become a fixture in his life. It started with casual hellos across their yards. Then, conversations whenever their paths crossed. Before long, his phone lit up with video game jokes she knew would make him laugh, and he fired back with memes about her favorite musicals.

He smiled despite himself. Molly never missed a chance to send him fan edits from the streaming channel he and Damian ran. Last summer, he rescued her stubborn lawnmower. A few months later, she shouted congratulations from across the street after spotting him on his porch, changing a lightbulb, and hearing about the game he and Damian had developed.

The memories warmed him, but they also sharpened the ache in his chest.

They were friends. Good neighbors. Yet every text, every laugh, every conversation only made him want more. Even now, Molly vanished from his sight, leaving him to wonder if she was sick, hurting, or desperately needed someone to knock.

Every morning, he woke with his body reminding him exactly how badly he wanted Molly. Just as persistent was the familiar hope that today would be different. Today, he’d finally find the courage to make a move.

The hope never lasted long.

He’d carried a torch for her since high school. More than ten years of stolen glances, imagined conversations, and second-guessed opportunities stretched behind him. Ten years of wanting more than friendship and settling for whatever scraps of her attention she freely offered.

For a while, Damian listened to it all. Then his brother grew tired of hearing Molly’s name attached to every story, every plan, every regret. Eventually, Duncan stopped talking about her altogether. The feelings never faded. He simply locked them away and carried them alone.

Flashing lights caught Duncan’s attention. A police cruiser pulled into Molly’s driveway. Duncan looked through his telescope and noticed a Stoney Point Police cruiser. Why is a Stoney Point cop coming to Molly’s house in Clarkstown?

He turned his telescope to Molly’s front door. The rain made it hard to distinguish much, but his heart jumped into his throat when Molly collapsed into one of the cop’s arms.

Duncan’s chest tightened. Something was wrong. Terribly wrong.

The image of Molly crying flashed through his mind, and a surge of panic shoved him into motion. He yanked open drawers, snatched the first clothes he found, and dragged them on with fumbling hands. He did a quick check in his mirror. His unruly dark brown hair stuck up at odd angles, and his tired hazel eyes, with purple bags beneath them, revealed extreme exhaustion. His six-foot-four frame craved rest, but his scorching need to get to Molly wouldn’t subside. If she’d gotten bad news, she shouldn’t have to face it alone.

His heart hammered against his ribs.

A sock landed on one foot. A different one landed on the other. He jammed his feet into his boots without bothering to check if they matched. Nothing mattered except getting to Molly.

He bolted from the room.

Please be okay.

The thought echoed through his head as he raced down the stairs and out the front door. As he crossed the street and entered her yard, Molly walked with the officers to their cruiser.

“What’s going on? Are you all right?” Duncan pressed, out of breath.

Molly shook her head as tears rolled down her pale cheeks.

Molly’s tiny frame shrank even smaller. At only five-foot-three and maybe 110 pounds, she always appeared physically vulnerable. That morning, her long, dark hair hung limp and wet down her back. Her golden-brown eyes glistened behind swollen, red-rimmed lids. Tear tracks streaked her cheeks, and fresh tears gathered faster than she could blink them away.

Pain twisted through his chest.

In all the years he’d known her, he’d never seen Molly like that. Not frustrated. Not upset. Shattered.

“It’s her brother. We’re taking her to Good Sam,” the male officer offered.

“I’ll talk to you when I come home,” Molly uttered.

“Of course. Anything you need, Molly, just call. I mean it. Anything.” Duncan couldn’t believe his assertiveness. Grief rarely touched Duncan’s life, but he’d watched it tear through people he loved. Friends went numb, family members broke down, and entire worlds crumbled under the weight of a single phone call.

As he looked at Molly, he recognized the same devastation.

Whatever waited for her on the other side of that moment, she wouldn’t face it alone. He would be there for her in any way he could. No matter how ugly or painful things became, he wasn’t going anywhere.

Molly grabbed Duncan’s hand and squeezed it. “I’ll explain later.”

With that, Molly got in the cruiser and left with the police. She looked back for a few seconds as Duncan stood in her driveway, drenched to the bone. With the cruiser out of sight, Duncan ran back to his house to turn on his police scanner to figure out what the hell happened to Zane Gravenhurst.

Duncan spent hours watching and waiting. He roamed the halls while Damian played games and chatted with his online girlfriend under an anonymous account.

By eleven o’clock, cars were parked at the Gravenhurst home. Zane’s girlfriend, Jillian, with her dad and Molly’s parents, arrived and entered the house. About ten minutes later, Molly arrived with Jillian’s mother.

Duncan kept his phone in his hand while he gazed at the house with his telescope. Molly’s dad, Drake, paced the floors. Within a half hour, Jillian left with a few bags in her car, which her father drove. A few minutes later, Duncan spied Molly in a tight embrace with Jillian’s mother on the porch. Molly went inside, where her father made wild gestures and yelled at her.

By this time, Duncan had righted his socks and got ready to go to Molly before her call came in. He took one last look, then noticed one car arrive, then another, and another. On and on until ten cars lined up and down our street.
At that moment, Duncan’s phone lit up with a call from Molly.

“Hey,” he answered with tentative sympathy.

“Can you come over? Damian, too, if he wants.” Her voice sounded raw and wrong.

“I can.” Duncan debated whether to end the call or ask the question. His need for an answer won out. “What happened to Zane?”

“Zane’s dead. I think he was murdered.”

Books I Plan to Read September 27 - October 3 and last week's results

Shikamoo (Hello in Swahili)

I hope everyone is doing fine. This weekend, we are being hit by a Nor'easter on and off. Some areas have major or minor flooding, but so far my home is fine, just downpours occasional and once in a while some thunder. The rain is expected to be on and off until Tuesday. Perfect reason to stay in and read, then do more packing. I am getting there, folks.

My reading went well this week. I even managed to sneak in an extra ebook. This is how it went.

Ebooks:

(finished) Prey for Me by Allie Oleander - 4 1/2 stars

How to Ruin a Rake by Kate Pearce - 4 1/2 stars

Devil's Snare by Nikki Landis - 5 stars

(extra read) The Marquess's Forbidden Bride by Julia Justiss - 5 stars

Audiobooks:

(finished) Can't Run with the Big Dogs by Tracy Carter - 5 stars

Goode Tidings by Jennifer Millikin - 4 1/2 stars

Planned Reading for September 27 to October 3

Ebooks:

Audiobooks:

Seems light once again, but we will see. I want to explain my rating system. You may notice that I give 1/2 stars. When I do, I select the next star down. For example, on the site where I am reviewing, I select 4 if I feel that it was a 4 1/2 rating. Half stars mean that it was a good story with a little more (or less if I feel that there is too much description or narrative that takes me out of the story), but not quite "I couldn't put it down" which gets the 5 stars. In the heading box and at the beginning of the review, I will put 4 1/2 stars so that readers will know. Do you write reviews? How do you rate those stories?

If you have a question about my rating system or my reading preferences, just let me know.

My Review - 5 of 5 stars -

An interesting start to a new series. I loved the paranormal aspect, different that expected. There was emotional pain, danger, secrets, and plenty of steam. Cin's patience and control of himself was intense, and he didn't just jump into bed. Gwen accepted everything with little question. She was adventurous, caring, and very trusting with others. I look forward to more in this series to see how all the other MC brothers react to finding "the one". Loved it.

Books I Plan to Reading September 20-26 and last week's results

Czesc (Hello in Polish),

I hope everyone had a good week. I have been fairly productive this week with regards to packing up my house. There is a light at the end of the tunnel. It has been a long time coming. (Enough tacky common phrases.) So has fall reached your area? We are finally spending more days in the 70's, going down to the 60's at night. Regardless of the temperatures, I am spending most of my waking hours inside, either reading or packing.

Here is last week's reading. I began one ebook and one audiobook that were planned, but I did not complete either. I will finish them up over the next couple of days.

Ebooks:

April's Fool by E.C. Land - 5 stars

Knight by Kate Bonham - 5 stars

Custody in the Crosshairs by Barb Han - 4 1/2 stars

Audiobook:

Code Violation by Ruth Stilling - 4 1/2 stars

Planned reading for September 20-26

Ebooks:

(finish) Prey for Me by Allie Oleander

I am waiting on two possible ARCs so it could be one of these:

OR

Audiobook:

(finish) Can't Run with the Big Dogs by Tracy Carter

As with the ebooks, I have an audiobook ARC I am waiting on so it could one of these.

OR

Recently, I have been agreeing to fewer ARCs as I don't want to disappoint anyone once I begin our drive west when I will have less time to read. It should only be a week of travel, but I could still fall behind. This is at least a month off, so I have no firm plans.

As I say goodbye for the week, I want to remind you all to take a moment to relax every day. If you find a couple hours with nothing to do, look in that closet you seldom go in and go through what is there. I am finding stuff from when my in-laws lived here, and I do not have a use for it. Do not forget to donate those items that are still in good shape if you don't want it. I took about 7 boxes to one of the local donation drop offs.

Well for now, Do widzenia (goodbye in Polish),

Ebook Review: Property of Whiskey (Kings of Anarchy MC: Kentucky #5) by Morgan Jane Mitchell

Blurb:

She wanted to arrest him. He used her cuffs first.
From USA Today Bestselling Author, Morgan Jane Mitchell comes the next in her Kings of Anarchy MC: Kentucky series, Property of Whiskey Property of Whiskey is book 5 in the Kings of Anarchy MC: Kentucky chapter but can be read as a
standalone.
Kidnapped by the Biker, Single Dad, Deputy x Outlaw, Sheriff’s Daughter, Age Gap, Badass Wrestler Heroine, Baby Mama Drama, Enemies to Lovers, Possessive Protective Biker, Cult Mystery, Cryptid Vibes, Small Town Kentucky, Dark Romantic Suspense

Twila
I’m the deputy of Paradise, a side-hustle wrestler in Hell, and the Sheriff's daughter, which means most men in Kentucky look at me like I come with headlocks and handcuffs. Not to mention a curfew and my daddy’s shotgun.
I’m tired of road checks, loose cows, and breaking up fights over who called who a heifer at the Piggly Wiggly. I want a real case.
Then more girls in Hell start going missing.
And I catch Whiskey red-handed, blood on his knuckles, and a terrified girl on his Harley. I think I’ve finally got my chance to prove myself.
Before I can arrest him, he takes me.
Now I’m trapped with the most dangerous King in Kentucky,
a tattooed biker with a filthy mouth, a record, and a softer side I never saw coming, a kid depending on him. The sexy biker is a single dad. He swears the club isn’t behind the mess.
Every mile I spend in his hands makes it harder to remember I’m supposed to hate him.
Especially when he keeps touching me like he’s already decided I belong to him.
Whiskey
Twila Dix is Sheriff Dix’s daughter, Paradise’s deputy, and a mouthy little menace with a badge and a right hook.
She saw too much on the wrong night and understood just enough to get herself killed, so I took her before Pearly Gates could.
Call it a public service if you’re feeling generous.
I’ve already got enough on my plate keeping the Kings’ secrets, staying ahead of my past, and raising my kid without a deputy from Paradise stomping through my house, my business, and under my skin.
Now Twila’s under my roof, in my clothes, and one smart remark away from finding out exactly how fast a King can turn captivity into something a whole lot filthier.
Her daddy made sure every man in town was too scared to come near her.
Lucky for me, I’ve never scared easy.

My Review - 5 of 5 stars -

I loved this story. There were a couple moments that creeped me out (can't wait to find out what is going on in the woods) as well as steamy ones, witty comebacks. Twila was a kick in the pants. She was very independent, wanted to prove herself with investigations, and had the good sense to believe some things that most wouldn't. Whiskey was so distrusting of her until he spent time with her. Their connection was strong and led to trust. Added to all this was the cute daughter of Whiskey. She was a firecracker for such a young thing. This town has a lot of issues, creepy and otherwise, and I look forward to following this MC to see how it all plays out.

I received an ARC, and this is my unsolicited review.

My Review - 5 of 5 stars -

This story was wonderful. I loved the determination of Elsea to help the selkies and try to win Brodie back. Her training in knives and swords gave her an upper hand when needed. Brodie fought his feelings so hard to protect his heart and mind. As he gave into some of those feelings, I had hoped the realization would have come faster, but the proper timing finally came. I had tears in my eyes. Throughout the story, I held my breath at times, shook my head at others, and smiled. A beautiful way to end the curse and this series.

I received an ARC, and this is my unsolicited review.

Blurb:

Eleanor Dare, daughter of Roanoke’s Governor John White, has no choice but to accompany her overly ambitious husband Ananias and her idealist, yet inexperienced father to England’s new colony. Manteo of Croatoan wants nothing more than to cast off his association with the English and return home. In the midst of this survival scenario, both Eleanor and Manteo—once powerless and marginalized in England, emerge as unlikely leaders of the ravaged colony.

Blending 16th century science, occult, and the impacts of early colonialism, A Strange and Terrible Wonder reimagines what became of the Lost Colony.

Excerpt: Prologue

“All down the church in midst of fire, the hellish monster flew, and passing onward to the quire, he many people slew.”
- Rev. Abraham Fleming, 1577

August 4, 1577
Bungay, England

At first, the congregants believe the slight rattling is only wind insisting upon the church door. A sudden summer tempest. Rain begins to patter above the nave, the sound not altogether unpleasant—soothing, even. A woman closes her eyes and exhales the stress of the morning as she focuses on the rhythm. Her peace is soon jilted by the growing tempest above, for the rain is now a wonderful force with no less violence than abundance. Her eyes snap open and roll to the vaulted ceiling. The great, forceful torrent empties above in what she imagines as glassy sheets pouring from the eaves. A low grumble of thunder. A child presses close to his mother. The two men kneeling at the altar do not flinch in their prayer; one for an abundant harvest season to pay his debts and another for a wife ailing in childbed.

Lightning flashes in brilliant brightness through the clouded, stretching windows. Silhouettes are carved out of the pews. A gust through the crack beneath the front door snuffs out the altar candles as if the tempest is compelling the congregants to sleep. They are all at once aware of the palpable darkness, so much so that one person cannot perceive another. The only light discerned by the congregants is not from the god hanging above them, but from the intermittent great flashing of fiery bolts.

The roar of the storm is so powerful now that the congregants shift with discomfort. A chill tightens the base of their spines as sweat springs on brows with each fearful heartbeat. The men kneeling in prayer do not relinquish their positions, though they see little, and their knees begin to ache against the flagstones. Instead, they press their eyes and hands tighter and pray now for the light to return. The only answer they receive is a terrible crack of thunder with such force and might that the congregants begin to believe doomsday has come.

The doors are thrown open as if by a blast of gunpowder. Lashing wind explodes down the nave, spraying hot rain onto the necks and backs of the congregants who dare not turn from the cross. The woman who had before held a moment of peace, presuming a gentle patter could not turn tempest, winces at the scalding sensation of boiling water against her bare skin. The church seems to quake and stagger as the scent of glowing iron, not unlike a blacksmith’s shop, permeates the darkened church.

The child clutches tightly to his mother when, amid twin lightning strikes, a great shape dashes down the nave toward the altar. The drops of rainwater on the flagstones sizzle as the thing passes in a hot rush of a blacksmith’s bellows. And with another flash of fire, the child sees it—they all see it: a great black dog with one ember glowing eye running with incredible haste. The woman muffles her scream as others bend beneath the flimsy pews as if a mere board of wood will save them from this devil.

The praying men feel great heat against their backs as if a bonfire has been lit before the altar. A sacrifice. Liquid fear runs down their legs, and still they dare not open their eyes nor pry their rigid hands apart. In another crack of thunder and lightning, the great black dog wrings both men’s necks backward in one clean instant. Its movement is so violent, so swift, that the dead men still kneel in prayer.

The child gasps when the lightning illuminates the whites of dead eyes in the heads bent unnaturally back. He buries his face in his mother’s skirts as her nails dig into his narrow shoulders. The beast turns on the congregation, its low growl indistinguishable from thunder, like a thousand carts moving across cobblestones. It stalks down the aisle, its bellows as hot as the summer sun’s rays. The congregants close their eyes against the darkness, press their slick palms together, and pray for their god to save them in his very house.

The beast chooses a man who dares glance up, for he believes he can slip out the door and escape this hell. Instead, the beast’s shining obsidian claws grip the man’s back in so forceful a manner that it is as if his entire body becomes drawn together and shrunk, as if it were a piece of leather scorched by hot fire. Wordless, he topples over with limbs trailing smoke.

The beast shifts into shadow, and the woman sitting next to the burned but still living man stumbles away from the charred flesh and wheezes for help. The rector, who has finally slid out of the shadows, catches her as she falls from the pew. He prays over her—whispering first, then increasing to test the roar around them. He exhorts the terrified congregants to prayer, and in their extreme distress, do so in darkness. The hot wind and scalding rain lash them, for the tempest has now fully invaded their sanctuary. Some congregants are frozen in terror, save their lips flapping desperate prayers, while others try in vain to crawl for the door.

In a flash, the beast materializes on the main beam above the congregants. Its searing talons set the old oak to smoldering as if coaxing a fire. Its ragged back chars the angel carved into the ceiling. The demon swings down through the church. Three lightning bolts follow the dog jumping from one man to another, then a lad, killing all three instantly. The dog dashes from the crumpled boy, and a deafening crack as if the earth has split in two cleaves the roof, and with it, the steeple. The cascade of stone rumbles down the side of the church, and for one striking moment of terror, a woman cries out that hell has opened to swallow the church whole.

The dog bounds for the next man. He dives away, yet not before his hand is burned by the scalding creature’s touch. In shock, the man lifts his charred hand to the burning sensation where his ear used to be. The creature blasts through the church doors, leaving a trail of scorch marks in the wood. The mischief thus wrought, the beast flies with wonderful force out of the churchyard in a hideous and hellish likeness.

Like a decimated forest in the aftermath of a windstorm, the congregants are left quivering. It’s clear to the man with the burned hand and missing ear that there are forces at work mightier than God, who could not protect his devout followers in His own house. Dazed, the man staggers out of the ruins with his compatriots. He looks to the rapidly clearing sky and resolves to find someone with knowledge of these unseen forces—and how to master them. A conjurer with the influence to pursue the arcane unhindered. What other reason could there be for such hell if not as a path to Providence for England? He will accept no other explanation.
