Books I Plan on Reading August 2-8 and last week's results

Good evening/good day to everyone,

I hope your week has been a good one. Did you take the time to relax? Go on a vacation? Summer is half over, and it is moving quickly still. The weather was fairly steady this week, temperatures in the 70's and 80's for the most part with the sun playing peek-a-boo most days.

This past week, I did manage to complete my reading, only just, by finishing up one book and one audiobook today. Packing up my house in preparation to moving is taking up a fair amount of my time. I seem to be getting there. Fingers crossed.

Last week's results -

Ebooks:

Property of Hayride by Nikki Landis - 5 stars

Death's Prescription by Jeffrey Marti - 4 1/2 stars

The Plus-One Pact by Suzy Langevin - 4 stars

Pride Comes Before a Fall by Virginia Heath - 4 1/2 stars

Audiobooks:

I've Got a Crush on You by Lauren Blakely - 5 stars

Killer Candy Corn by Amelia Pine - 4 1/2 stars

Planned Reading for August 2-8:

Ebooks:

Audiobook:

Most of the ebooks should be quick reads, and I am looking forward to reading them.

Enjoy the second half of the summer. Make sure to relax, keep yourself centered, and smell the flowers as you go.

Until next week,

Hwyl fawr (goodbye in Welsh)

Ebook Review: Pride Comes Before a Fall (Miss Prentice's Protegees #3) by Virginia Heath

Blurb

In the third installment of this witty Regency romcom series, a headstrong chaperone is torn between following her rigid principles or her heart

Despite his many responsibilities, there is nothing Leopold Sloane, the 11th Duke of Debden, takes more seriously than the safety of those he loves. When one of his sisters is injured at a protest rally, he drags his family to Bath for the summer to keep his reckless and rebellious siblings out of harm’s way. The only flaw in his plan is his overwhelming but inexplicable attraction to the new chaperone he has hired to watch out for them. An outspoken conundrum of a woman who soon causes him more trouble than both his sisters combined...but who calls to his soul regardless.

From the moment Portia Kendall read her first revolutionary pamphlet beneath her bedcovers at Miss Prentice’s School for Girls, she realized that her true calling was to make the world a fairer place for the masses downtrodden by the aristocracy. A calling that led her to
Equitas, a radical newspaper that champions reform. But as Portia discovers, writing doesn’t pay the bills. To make a living, she must push aside her principles and serve the very people she criticizes weekly in her column. A temporary position as a chaperone in the home of a pompous duke seems like the perfect way to earn enough to follow her heart. Unfortunately, the duke who hires her seems to be more dashing and noble than pompous and soon begins to call to her heart too—as much as she tries to deny it. But dare she risk her principles for love or will her pride always come before a fall?

My Review - 4 1/2 of 5 stars -

4 1/2 stars. Portia was quite a handful. I loved her determination to help get reform off the ground and even her naivete with doing before thinking it through. Leo was careful, friendly, and protective, but could not admit his true feelings. There were plenty of secrets between them and almost more than their friendship and relationship could take. The ending was very amusing, and I enjoyed this story.

I received a copy through Netgalley, and this is my unsolicited review.

Audiobook Review: Killer Candy Corn (Sea Glass Beach Mysteries #4) by Amelia Pine, narrator Bobbie Gentili

Blurb

A candy maker dead in his own vat. A ghost who won't stay quiet. And a Halloween in Sea Glass Beach that's about to get very complicated.

Milliner Paige Andrews has seen some things since moving back to her hometown on the California coast. But finding local candy maker Milo Love face-down in a bubbling vat of molten candy corn? That's a new one, even for her.

Everyone agrees it's murder. What nobody can agree on is who, or what, is responsible. And the ghost that's been haunting her boutique? She's picking a really inconvenient time to make herself known.

When a celebrity ghost hunter rolls into town and sets up camp in Paige's hat shop, the line between mortal mischief and otherworldly interference starts to blur in ways even Lola can't sniff out. With the Beachside Dining Club working every angle and Sea Glass Beach's Halloween festival turning every local into a costumed suspect, Paige is juggling a murder investigation, a media circus, and a spirit who seems to know more than she's letting on.

Someone in this town has a deadly sweet tooth. And they're betting Paige is too spooked to catch them.

Can she untangle the mortal from the supernatural before the killer disappears like a ghost?

Killer Candy Corn is a wickedly fun Halloween cozy mystery perfect for fans of Denise Swanson, Maggie Blackburn, and Juliet Blackwell's Witchcraft Mystery series. Packed with coastal charm, found-family warmth, a scene-stealing beagle, and bonus recipes for your own Halloween table.

If you love...

  • Halloween mysteries with genuine spook alongside the laughs
  • a heroine who's in over her head but too stubborn to quit
  • paranormal threads woven into classic cozy mystery structure
  • a found family that's weird, loyal, and absolutely indispensable

...Sea Glass Beach at Halloween is not to be missed.

My Review - 4 1/2 of 5 stars -

4 1/2 stars for me. This was my first read/listen in the Sea Glass Beach Mysteries. I enjoyed it very much with the teamwork between Paige and friends. There were plenty of clues, more than one crime, and a murder. I loved the ghost aspect and the "paranormal show" taping. Overall, a fun listen, and I look forward to more in the series.

The narration by Bobbie Gentili was wonderful. She gave life to the many different characters and brought in the emotions. Well done.

This is my unsolicited review.
