GENRE: Children's Fiction
BLURB:
Poppy cannot wait for summer to arrive so she can travel to her favourite place with her favourite person. When she and her father turn onto the dirt road that takes them to their family cottage, Poppy leaves life's worries behind. Follow Poppy, Pa, and rest of their extended family, as they experience the magic that unfolds over the course of a day in Muskoka, Canada. Live in Poppy's vivid imagination, which flourishes in the safety and beauty of her surroundings and discover the difference one person can make in the life of a child.
EXCERPT:
My cousins, Pa, and I would swim to The Point – a large underwater rock, marked by a pointed Inuksuk, located at the mouth of our bay. We would pass our neighbours’ cottages along the way, their dogs excitedly following our journey on the shore or running down their docks to meet us. When we reached The Point, we would first feel the slimy, rough rock below our bellies, as if being lifted on the back of a whale. We would pull ourselves along the rock’s massive underwater surface, careful to not graze our hands or knees, then climb up above the water, standing tall beside the tower of rocks. We spent the rest of our time sliding down its slippery backside, over and over again—our own natural playground.
Pa would drive the speedboat and we would take turns being towed. I loved watching my talented cousins make beautiful shapes in the water as they cut through the waves, starting on two skis before quickly dropping one, the spray of water off their skis creating a glittering cape behind them.
AUTHOR Bio and Links:
Kristyn Jewell, a lifelong reader, wrote her first story at the age of 39, inspired by her father and his enduring legacy. She works by day as a family physician, but her true love is the pursuit of hygge, found through travel, design, wildlife, cozy fires and lattes. After living throughout Canada, in Vancouver and Toronto, she and her husband returned to Dundas, Ontario, the quaint valley town that she grew up in, to raise their family. She passes on her love of nature and animals to her two boys and still spends as much time as she can by the water.

My Review - 5 of 5 stars -
I enjoyed this. It was full of love of family, traditions (old country and new), and outdoors. Poppy spent time with her pa, cousins, grandparents. They cooked, ate, fished, camped, roasted marshmallows, and more. I loved the educational side and the illustrations to accompany the story. A great book to gift and read at bedtime.
