I hope everyone is doing fine. This weekend, we are being hit by a Nor'easter on and off. Some areas have major or minor flooding, but so far my home is fine, just downpours occasional and once in a while some thunder. The rain is expected to be on and off until Tuesday. Perfect reason to stay in and read, then do more packing. I am getting there, folks.

My reading went well this week. I even managed to sneak in an extra ebook. This is how it went.

Half stars mean that it was a good story with a little more (or less if I feel that there is too much description or narrative that takes me out of the story), but not quite "I couldn't put it down" which gets the 5 stars. "I'm Eli Matthews," he said, and held out the coffee tray. "Town historian and unofficial town greeter. I brought options. Decaf, regular, and one with oat milk, because the clinic called ahead and..." he paused, reconsidering his own sentence, "okay, I asked Margaret at the post office, who asked Clara at the bakery, who said she had heard that you'd mentioned oat milk to someone at the gas station in Lehighton."

Jules stared at the tray. "That's a significant intelligence operation for a cup of coffee."

He smiled, a little sheepishly. "Small town. We have patterns." He glanced at the pumpkin on the porch. "Also, it's October. We take hospitality seriously in October."

She reached for the oat milk coffee. Behind her, someone cleared their throat very distinctly — the throat-clearing of someone who had been waiting a respectable amount of time and was now done waiting. Jules's hand tightened around the cup.

She recognized that sound. She knew it the way she knew a change in barometric pressure, in her teeth, at the base of her skull, in the specific cold that moved along her spine when something was present that had no business being present.

Absolutely not. I am not doing ghosts again.

“I’m so glad I pretended I didn’t know how to fix a tire,” I snap.

His brow furrows, like he can’t believe he was played. “Wait. You could’ve done it yourself?”

I wave a hand at the tire. “You think I’m going to drive all the way from Evergreen Falls to San Francisco and not know how to fend for myself? I know Krav Maga, how to fix a flat, patch a sweater, and even unclog a sink. What can you do?” I tap my boot on the snowy ground. “I’ll wait.”

“I can save your pet’s life,” he says, going toe-to-toe. “Dog. Cat. Hamster. Take your pick.”

Dammit. I walked right into that one, and I have no comeback. Dr. Dick casually leans against my truck and snaps a selfie with a thumbs-up.

“What was that for?”

“My brother,” he says, fiddling with his phone still and not even looking up. “This has to be worth at least ten points for the twin game.” Finally, he puts his phone away, then tips his hat like some smug cowboy vet. “Trish’s Treads in Evergreen Falls should be open still. I just checked, so you can get a new tire put on stat if you need it, or have it permanently patched. The snow’s going to be falling for a while.”

Ugh. He’s irritating and helpful. But he doesn’t get to tell me what to do. I can work out when to fix the tire myself. “I’ll keep that in mind for the future. I’m actually very busy—on my way to an ornament-making class tonight, and not a flat tire, or even someone like you can ruin it!”

He half turns, a smirk shifting his lips. “Of course you are. You’re a jolly.”

“Again, if the alternative is to be a grinch like you, I guess I am!” 

“Your call,” he says with a smile before he slides into his truck and reaches back to pet his too-cute dog, who turns to look my way out the window.

I didn’t think this day could get any worse, but now I have a new enemy. Not the dog, of course.
