He drove straight out onto the runway of the small airport, then came to a stop next to
another police cruiser with its lights off, a big black Lincoln Navigator sat at the base of an
impressive private jet. The stairs were down and the light inside glowed behind the sheen of the
early morning mist. A peach illumination in the distance reminded me how much I hated
sunrises these days.

I used to love them. Seeing a sunrise meant I’d spent an entire night with friends and
lovers talking and partying all the way to the next day. It meant I was living, really living. Not
wasting too much time asleep but being awake and free to create music and memories. That
was long ago. Three lifetimes ago. Now it meant I couldn’t sleep. That the memories kept me awake. That I was still living and forced to be a functioning human. I was surviving enough for
my daughter and her insistence that I stay in her life, when she wasn’t mad at me. And the
music, always the music, but other people’s music. Not mine, never mine.

“Alright.” Kurt met me at the top of the stairs. “Now, this is strictly confidential. I’ve
had explicit instructions to deny any goings on here for the safety of the passenger,” he stated
gravely.

“What in the hell are you talking about?”

He used to work for Bernie and Sandy when they lived at BernSand full time. But they
let his crew go when they left on their cruise and Kurt wasn’t too happy about it. I wasn’t sure
why he was involved with this mystery person or who was paying him.

Kurt turned his bulky body sideways and placed his hands on his hips. My view of a
heap on the floor in the middle isle of the plane was still slightly obscured by his massiveness.
I pushed past him to get a better look. I’d seen women passed out on the floor before,
maybe too many times to have any strong emotions about it. I only wanted to know who it was
that was so important that the police needed my sorry ass in the middle of the night.

“I’m not sure how many of these she took,” The airplane captain in his white uniform
held out a prescription bottle to me on the far side to the body. I didn’t take it. I needed to see
who the woman was.

I knelt at her bare feet. She wore ivory silk pants and matching blouse, almost like
pajamas making her look ethereal in the way she lay on her side like a Botticelli painting. Her
dark hair lay across her face. I heard a gasp from Stewie when I brushed the hair way from her
face. The bandage across her forehead and large yellow and purple bruise on her swollen cheek
almost made her unidentifiable, except for the dark beauty mark next to her right eye, long
luscious lashes, and full pink lips.

I looked back at Kurt. “This is Shay Lazar.”

Excerpt:

The whisper of wrongness crystallized into certainty when he spotted it: the tampering was subtle but unmistakable to someone who’d maintained this equipment for years. The safety seal on the regulator had been broken and incompletely reattached, and the connection threads showed fresh tool marks—signs of recent disassembly by someone other than their certified technician. Even more concerning was what he found when he inspected further: the O-ring that created an airtight seal had been partially shaved down on one side, creating a slow leak that would accelerate under pressure.

A cold weight settled in Shawn’s stomach. This wasn’t an accident or normal wear. Someone had deliberately damaged the equipment—Becks’ equipment specifically—in a way that would pass cursory inspection but fail catastrophically during use.

For a moment, his fingers hovered over his radio. He should alert Becks immediately—tell her what he’d found.

But the station was a flurry of activity now, everyone preparing to respond to a potential structure fire. Lives could be at stake. There wasn’t time for the investigation this would require—not with flames potentially spreading through the Thatcher house.

His pulse quickening, Shawn glanced at the wall where their spare units hung. Making a split-second decision, he quickly tagged the compromised tank and set it aside, grabbing a spare air cylinder from the rack. He then carefully checked that the regulator and face mask in Becks’ personal gear were undamaged before connecting the replacement cylinder.

As the crew moved toward the engines, Shawn pulled out his phone and sent a quick text to Chief Washington: “Possible tampering with B’s air cylinder. Tagged unit and secured in equipment room. Replaced with spare number three. Will brief after call.”

He slipped his phone back into his pocket as he pulled on his turnout gear. He’d tell Becks after the call. For now, they had a job to do.

She’s a grump with a grudge. He’s a sweetheart with a slapshot. Sparks were expected, but the fireworks? Pure magic.

Mabel
Returning to Maple Falls wasn’t part of my five-year plan—or my backup plan. Or any plan, really. But here I am, back in my quirky hometown, dodging my mother’s judgment and trying not to cringe every time someone mentions the viral moment. (Yes, that one. No, I don’t want to talk about it.)

When my editor sends me to cover the NHL’s shiny new team, the Ice Breakers, I’m all in—until I meet Asher Tremblay. He’s their too-charming defenseman with a knack for wrecking my focus and my sanity. Equal parts infuriating and irresistible, but falling for him? Not on my agenda. Nope.

Asher
I’ve worked my whole life to make it in the NHL. A new team means a fresh start, and I won’t let anything distract me—least of all a snarky reporter who seems determined to hate me on sight.

But the more I see Mabel, the more I want to know what’s behind her walls. She’s fire and chaos, and I’ve spent my whole life playing it safe. Maybe she’s exactly what I need. I came to Maple Falls to chase my dream, but now all I want is her.

Excerpt: Mabel's POV

My mother and I have a way of bickering that would make a therapist cringe—or drive them straight to their own therapist after one session with us. I’ve often thought over the years it might be our love language, but even my old friend Neesha thinks it’s odd how my mother can show one face to Maple Falls while reserving another one only for me.
I go back to scanning the room as she talks to me. She’s moved on, chatting away about her plans for Maple Fest and an Ice Breakers-themed brunch she wants to host, when my gaze lands on someone I am not at all prepared to deal with, at least not right now.
Asher sits at a corner booth, with someone I guess is a fellow hockey player, judging by his size, hunched over what looks like the world’s most serious plate of pancakes. The expression on Asher’s face is like he’s trying to solve complex mathematical equations with syrup patterns. He’s wearing a baseball cap pulled low, probably thinking it makes him invisible in a town where everyone knows everyone’s breakfast order by heart.
Our eyes meet across the diner for exactly 2.3 seconds—long enough for my stomach to do something that feels suspiciously like figure skating—and instead of looking away like a normal person trying to lie low, his whole face lights up with this ridiculously genuine smile. Like spotting me in a crowded diner just made his entire morning. Real subtle, hotshot.
Mom’s still talking, prattling on about coordinating with the mayor’s office and needing my help with decorations—but her words are starting to fade into the background. Asher looks up again, catching me mid-stare. This time, he doesn’t look away immediately, and I don’t either. Instead, I feel the corners of my traitorous mouth tug upward, unbidden and entirely against my better judgment.
Great, now I’m staring back at him like some kind of diner stalker with a suspiciously enthusiastic grin. Fast as I can, I clamp down on it with such force my jaw practically clicks, replacing it with what I hope is a neutral expression.
“Mabel?” Mom’s voice cuts through my mental spiral. “Are you even listening to me?”
“Yes,” I lie, still peripherally aware of the hockey player who’s now paying way too much attention to his coffee cup. “Ice Breakers brunch. Very...brunchy.”
Mom follows my line of sight, and I watch her entire demeanor shift from frustrated mother to practically vibrating with small-town excitement. “Oh my goodness, is that—”
Before I can groan or stick out my foot to trip her as she takes off, Mom is in Mary-Ellen mode and headed straight for their table. Honestly, she’s such a stalker but I love her.
“Well, hello, Carson,” Mom says. She turns to me knowingly. “We met at the farmers’  market, what, last week?”
“Yes, ma’am. You’re the reason I’m here today. You told me about Shirley May’s pancakes, so I’m here to have some.” He looks at me and holds out his hand. “Hi, I’m Carson.”
“Carson Crane, also known as Bama,” I say, shaking his hand. “I’m Mabel McCluskey, her daughter but also a reporter for Athletic Edge.”
Carson grins. “Very cool. You in town for a visit?”
“Here for some interviews,” I say, casting a look at Asher before snapping my attention back to Carson. “Would love to talk to you at some point, if you don’t mind?”
“Hand me your phone,” he says, holding out his hand. “I’ll give you my cell. Let me know when and I’m happy to talk.”
After he adds himself as a new contact and hands me my phone back, he points across the table to his companion while I slide into a seat at the empty booth opposite them. “Have you ladies met Asher yet?”
“Not me, but”—Mom flicks her hand my way as she joins me—“apparently my daughter has.”
Asher’s lips are pulled up at the corners with the biggest smile, but when I meet his gaze all I see in his eyes reflected back at me is pure delight. Mischief even. He taps his mouth.
“How’s it going?” he asks while Carson and my mother exchange a look.
“It’s fine, thank you. All fixed.” I grab a menu off a nearby table and flip it open, pretending there’s a need to scan it right now. I highly doubt Shirley May has changed anything on this menu since she opened her doors, but today I’m going to make sure of it.
“She’s not allowed solid foods for another hour,” my mother explains as if someone asked. She looks at Carson and Asher as she tosses a sympathetic look my way. “Chipped front tooth.”
“Mom.” The horror. She’s always loved to tell everyone about my business. Don’t get me started on my first menstrual cycle. She announced it to the church choir. “Carson and Asher don’t need to know…”

I clear my throat as I slide my hands protectively over my son’s shoulders.

"Oh, hi, Mommy," Benny says, glancing at me momentarily before he returns his attention to his comic book—and the man.

"What are you guys talking about?" I ask lightly, narrowing my eyes at the man, my subtext being who are you and why the heck are you talking with my son?

The man shifts his attention from Benny to me, and as he does, he rises to his full height, all six feet whatever. He's tall, way taller than me, and, I admit begrudgingly, he's handsome. With his sandy blond hair kinda scruffy and a touch too long in that effortless, I-woke-up-handsome kind of way, his strong jawline is covered in a cropped beard with a few specks of salt and pepper that somehow works on him. My guess is he's mid-thirties, maybe older, and he's got the kind of face that makes your stomach do a slow flip.

In fact, he looks a little like a blond Jacob Elordi, as well as...familiar.

Yeah, definitely familiar.

"You must be Benny's mom," he says, his voice deep and sonorous, his gray eyes pinning me in place.

I tighten my hold on Benny's shoulders, lifting my chin in a vain attempt to appear taller than my five feet three inches against this...this...handsome giant. A handsome giant who thinks it's okay to talk with young boys they don't know in bookstores.

"I am Benny's mom. And you are?" I ask pointedly.

His ludicrously handsome face morphs into a smile as he extends one of his huge hands toward me. "Cade Lennox. Pleased to meet you, ma'am."

Ma'am? Oh, no, he did not just ma'am me!

How old does this guy think I am?

I'm too busy gaping at him to respond, and after a beat, he pulls his hand away, giving me a sheepish smile.

"I was talking with Benny here about the latest comic in the The Timekeeper Chronicles. We're both fans," he explains. "It's great that this bookstore gets the comics. I'm new in town and this is a big find for me. I thought I'd have to order them online, which just isn't the same."

"Well, that's very nice of you, Mr.---" I'm about to say "Elordi" when it snaps into place who this guy is. He’s the right winger for the newly minted Ice Breakers. In fact, I’ve got a picture of him in his New York City Blades uniform in my spreadsheet at home. His most recent season stats float before my eyes. Thirty-seven goals, twenty-four assists, average slapshot over 100 mph, and forty-two penalty minutes, mostly for chirping at refs, which he has a reputation for doing.

“Lennox,” he finishes for me, shooting me a look that seems to ask whether my brain is functioning properly.

“I just worked out who you are.”

An unexpected trip home to Maple Falls gets even more surprising when I inadvertently become acting mayor.
Add a huge crisis and a smoking hot hockey player, and I’m in over my head before I know it.

I’m only here for a short time, so I will not fall for Mr. Tall, dark, and adorable. I don’t care how helpful and kind he is. Long-distance never works, so the answer is no.

I’m sick of the press hounding me about my last relationship, so when the opportunity arose to captain a new hockey team in smalltown Washington, I jumped at it.

Too bad I didn’t ask more questions before moving here, like, “Are there bears, and will they be living in my backyard?”

Then there’s Ashlyn. The last thing I expected was to meet a funny, sassy, and good-hearted woman like her. I swore off love after my last heartbreak, but my heart is acting like it missed the memo.

There’s no way I’m going to pursue her. Unless of course, fate has intervened, and we were meant to be…

After she leaves, I turn my attention back to Ashlyn. “I don’t usually get ignored. You must be something special in this town.”
“No more special than every other kid who grew up here. The difference is, I didn’t stay. As a result, when I come home, some of my old friends get excited.”
“Where do you live?”
“Los Angeles. I went to college at UCLA, and I stayed.”
“I’m from New York City.”
“I go there often for work.” She explains, “I’m a closet designer for rich people. A lot of my clients have homes on both coasts.”
Shaking my head, I tell her, “I can’t imagine needing someone to organize my closet for me.”
Her gaze moves from my face to what she can see of my outfit. “Not much of a clothes horse, huh?”
It feels like she’s judging me and for some reason that irritates me. “I have over fifty pairs of shoes,” I brag.
“Wow.” The accompanying laughter makes it clear she’s not impressed.
We sit quietly for long enough that I once again think about getting my food to go. But then Ashlyn announces, “My dad wanted to talk you and your teammates into holding a kissing booth at Maple Fest to bring in a bigger crowd.”
I nearly spit out the sip of water I just took. I force myself to swallow it before telling her, “That’s not going to happen.”
She scoffs. “I know, right?”
What does she mean by that?
She seems to realize I’ve taken offense because she adds, “Not that women wouldn’t want to kiss you. I mean, I’m sure someof them would …” Just clearly not her. Which is fine, because I don’t currently want to kiss anyone, including her.
Yet, I can’t seem to help myself from boasting, “Women enjoy kissing hockey players.”
“Open your mouth,” she orders.
I don’t know why, but I do as she instructs. She leans forward and peers inside. “It looks like you have all your teeth, so that’s a plus.”
“I’m still not going to volunteer my guys for a kissing booth,” I tell her.
Her face crunches up like I’ve just offered her a worm salad. “Please don’t. I’ve already told my dad what a disgusting idea that is.”
“You don’t like kissing men, huh?” I wonder if she’s gay.
“I most certainly do enjoy kissing men,” she says. “Just not strangers. And certainly not ones who’ve been kissing a lot of other women.” She grimaces before adding, “I mean really, hockey players? Imagine where all those mouths have been.”

When your mean boss asks you if you’re ready to admit defeat—and move out of his car…you wonder where you went wrong in life.
Two weeks ago, I was an optimistic office girl with a Pinterest vision board and a dream.
Now? I’m standing in a billionaire’s penthouse office, trying not to throw a donut at his smug, perfect face.
McCarthy Svensson is my new boss-slash-personal tormentor.
Though he thinks he’s my only protector.

He’s wrong. He’s way worse than the merry-go-round of ex fiancés who may or may not be stalking me, including ex-fiancé number one of three, who fakes his death then pops up out of a casket. Alive.
Yes, I have a messy dating life.
I like to think it makes me unique and quirky!
He doesn’t seem to think so.

When he growls, “I’m not helping you until you admit you need me,” I slam a binder against his chest and smile sweetly.
“Pick your fake girlfriend, buddy. Deadline’s midnight.”
He smirks. “As long as she’s nothing like you.”
Cool.
Now all I have to do is convince this ice-cold bastard that I’m exactly what he needs…

No not like that! I’m trying to save his reputation and my job.
And I’m not saving either if I keep letting him finger me in the back seat of his limo…gulp.

Stalkers, hot but toxic bosses, a granny with a flamethrower… This full-length, stand-alone, enemies-to-lovers romantic comedy with all of the crazy laughs and of course the perfect happily ever after!

EXCERPT

Lips thin, McCarthy extricates Truman from my bag and sets him on the floor, where the little dog rolls on his back for a belly rub.
“I’m not petting you,” McCarthy tells him. “I don’t like you or your owner. And why does your dog smell like garlic butter, Cupcake?”
I tap him lightly with my Stanley cup. “You will not make it in prison, not with that pretty face, so let’s be pleasant to people today!”
McCarthy bares his teeth then scowls as Truman jumps up onto the leather chair then onto the desk and flops on his back.
“Being nice is how you screwed up your life, Cupcake. You have a grocery store aisle full of terrible exes.”
Finally relenting, he scratches Truman’s belly.
“Nathan isn’t an ex.”
“Not yet.”
“My fiancé, who I love very much, and I are going to spend a romantic weekend together. I love him,” I say. “He loves me.”
He has to.
And if he didn’t ask me how I was after the funeral, that’s because he’s worried about work and securing our future.
With thoughts of yesterday come the threat of tears. To distract myself and not let McCarthy see, I check my phone for the time, ignoring the deluge of new potentially stalkerish messages.
I pat him on the arm. “Don't worry. I'm here to wallpaper over all your mental deficiencies.”
“My mental deficiencies?” he barks. “Cupcake, I already know more about your dating life than I ever wanted to. I could write a dissertation on your romantic delusions.”
“I don’t want to hear you accuse my fiancé of cheating on me again,” I say, warning him.
“I don’t have to. A little introspection and you’ll see I’m right.”
A stack of books drops on his desk with a bang.
“These are self-help dating books.” He holds them up one by one. “This one is well reviewed. This one is from a person with a PhD. This is by an influencer who believes in crystals and ley lines, so it's probably more on your level.”
“Ooh! Pink! Aww, McCarthy!” I beam at him. “See? You can be a nice person.”
He gets in my face. “Your dating life is the most stressful thing going on for me right now, and that includes having my little brother screw up in my office on a daily basis and ruin million-dollar satellites.”
“Choo, choo! Let’s ride that Mr. Nice Guy train all the way to the station of gratitude!” I spin to the door. “We’re bringing pastries for your employees, and we have to get in line at the bakery. Where’s your security team? I want to go over the itinerary with your head of security. After yesterday, I’m sure he’s locking everything down.”
McCarthy twists, reaching under his jacket. He pulls out a gun.
I squeak.
“I don’t need a goddamn security team. This is America. I have Smith, Wesson, and the Second Amendment. Let someone fuck with me. I wish they would.”
