Ebook Review: The Highlander's Cursed Lass (Spellbound Hearts #4) by Julie Johnstone

Blurb

To claim the Highland stronghold I’ve always wanted, I must capture the cursed lass the king seeks.
Then deliver her to him.
The price I never expected to pay…is my heart.

James
I was born a bastard, and I’ve never had anything truly mine.
So when the king promises a castle and lairdship to the warrior who finds a mysterious healer and delivers her to him, I join the hunt.
Finding Katreine Wallace is simple.
Taking her to the king proves far more complicated than I bargained for.
It begins with a lie—mine—that I’ll serve as her protector on some foolish journey.
Yet every mile we ride together makes the truth harder to hide.
And somewhere along the road, she ceases being a means to an end.
Now she’s the woman I can’t stop wanting—far more dangerous to my heart than any enemy I’ve ever faced.
Because when Katreine’s past rises to hurt her…
I’ll have to choose.
The lairdship I’ve fought my whole life to earn.
Or the cursed lass who has already claimed my heart.

Katreine
There was a time when I would do anything for love—even make a dangerous wish that cursed me to never age and forced me from my home and family.
I tried to build a new life, but I cannot outrun a curse that steals everyone I dare to love.
There’s only one chance to break it.
Return to the Dark Woods where it all began.
Face the witch who damned me.
To survive the journey, I need a formidable Highland warrior to protect me.
And just when I think the search is hopeless,
James Ross appears.

Tall.
Dangerous.
And wickedly cunning.

He vows to see me safely to my destination.
And foolishly, I believe him.
Until I discover he’s taking me straight back to the danger I once fled.
I hate James for his deception.
But the farther we travel across the Highlands, the harder it becomes to hold on to that anger.
Because James protects me as though I belong to him.
Touches me like I’m something precious.
And when he kisses me, the desire between us becomes far more than either of us planned.
He thinks I’m his path to a stronghold.
What neither of us expected…
Is that loving me could cost him everything he’s fought his whole life to gain.

My Review - 5 of 5 stars -

This was quite a story to end the series. I loved it from beginning to end. Katreine's curse kept her away from her family, and she had to witness friends passing. Her skills as a healer became well known, and she was quite sought after. James was very sure of himself as a tracker and did his best to be aware of his surroundings before and after his hunt for Katreine. Doubts, secrets, and danger followed them on their trek to their future. There were moments of tears and smiles. It kept me reading.

Ebook Review: Whose Body? (Lord Peter Wimsey Mystery #1) by Dorothy L. Sayers

Blurb

Dorothy L. Sayers’ 1923 debut mystery novel “Whose Body?” is a classic cozy mystery featuring the debonair aristocrat-sleuth Lord Peter Wimsey. After a corpse wearing pince-nez glasses is found in a bathtub, Lord Peter undertakes to investigate the deed privately. But determining whether the corpse belongs to a well-known banker or a group of mischief-making medical students is just the beginning of this tangled mystery plot. This atmospheric novel put Dorothy L. Sayers in the ranks with Agatha Christie as a mystery writer nonpareil.

My Review - 4 of 5 stars -

This was my first Dorothy Sayers book. I enjoyed meeting Lord Peter Wimsey and his friend/partner Mr. Parker. It was interesting in the play between the two because of their difference in standing. I had an inkling as to the culprit, but there were so many clues, I became uncertain. The dialogue sometimes had me confused with the use of some terms, whether archaic or slang. I loved how everything was explained in the end.

Ebook Review: Lady Veronica's Lost Gem (The Riddle Sisters #6) by Jennifer Monroe

Blurb

A deadly mission. A stolen legacy. A love neither of them saw coming.

Lady Veronica Standwick has spent years proving she is more than another woman waiting for rescue. As a spy for the Underground, she has learned to trust no one and guard her heart with the same precision she guards the Crown's secrets. But when she locates the lost heir to the Saltersford dukedom, those iron barriers begin to crack.

James Dunning is a quiet schoolteacher who believes shaping young minds is the greatest adventure he will ever have. When a sharp-tongued beauty arrives at his door claiming he is the lost heir to a dukedom, he thinks she has lost her mind. But the proof she carries is undeniable. And so is the woman holding it.

As James adjusts to his new life as a duke, the mystery of why he was kidnapped as a child brings on a new danger—an assassin wanting to take his life. As Veronica fights to keep him alive, James finds the red-headed beauty impossible to read and harder to look away from. For Veronica, the allure of James awakens a feeling she thought long buried: love. But the secret she hides may destroy them both before his enemies ever get the chance.

Lady Veronica's Lost Gem,
Book 6 of the six-book Riddle Sisters series, is a sweet and clean Regency romance with a guaranteed happily ever after. Perfect for fans of Sarah M. Eden and Julie Klassen.

My Review - 5 of 5 stars -

I enjoyed this story, the last of the Riddle children. With the Riddle sisters having done their part, Veronica went to collect the Lost Gem. James was a surprise. I loved his caring attitude to his students and his acceptance of the change in his circumstances. The connection between Veronica and James was obvious, but they did try hard to keep it from being personal for safety sake. Despite the danger surrounding them, they had lovely sweet moments. I had tears for the last bit of the book as it touched my heart.

My Review - 4 of 5 stars -

This was an intriguing story with lots of secrets, gossip, and underhandedness while Cordelia and Alexander discover more about each other. I loved Cordelia's independence, intelligence, and caring heart. She was loyal to her sisters. Alexander was very set in his ways until a conversation with Cordelia had him rethinking his stance. It took a while before either would admit to feelings, and sneaky events pushed them apart. I had tears at the end as they expressed their true feelings. I did feel that there was too much description at times as well as, I felt, too much reiteration on Alexander's old stance on issues and how they would affect the situation they were in.

Ebook Review: How to Save a Spy (Duke of Lies Series) by Jane Charles

Blurb

As war wages in the Caribbean and preparations are made for a British invasion of French-held Martinique, Rhys McNaught is sent to the island to gather pre-invasion intelligence by The Lion Watch, a covert spy agency. Even though he is aware of the danger if caught, Rhys also enjoys living on a tropical island far removed from a gloomy and cold England, and the peace of being alone.

After spending the Christmas holiday with family, Miss Tempest Driscoll and her five younger sisters set sail from Barbados to their home in Dominica on a British cutter owned by her uncle. When their ship is attacked by a French brig and seriously damaged, the captain has Tempest and her sisters delivered to a Martinique beach for safety, where she is forced to find shelter for her siblings.

When Rhys returns to his home with gathered intelligence, he is stunned to find that six females have taken up residence in his home, a once-abandoned ramshackle hut beneath the shelter of the trees. He wants them gone but also knows that he must protect Tempest and her sisters until he can get them off the island before they are discovered by the French or the British invade and they are caught in the battle.

When danger finds them, Rhys is willing to sacrifice himself while Tempest must choose between escaping with her sisters or following her heart to save her spy.

My Review - 4 1/2 of 5 stars -

4 1/2 stars. I enjoyed this story. Rhys was surprised when he found six females in his hut, where he resided while keeping an eye on French activity on the island. His disillusion with spying and his job had him completing this assignment so that he could head to his home in Antigua. He accepted that he needed to protect these women and children with possible war coming. I loved the antics of the children. Tempest was determined to protect her sisters, but she also took care of Rhys, even though the two of them argued on and off. A very wonderful story.

Ebook Review: The Secret Lives of Murderers' Wives by Elizabeth Arnott

Blurb

A remarkable trio whose lives have been cracked wide open by their husbands’ crimes unite to catch a serial killer in this dazzlingly captivating novel.

Beverley, Elsie, and Margot are not your average housewives. They are all wives of convicted killers. During the sun-drenched summer of 1966, the three women form an unlikely friendship after the discoveries of their husbands’ brutal crimes. With their exes—some of California’s most infamous murderers—dead or behind bars, they are attempting to forge a new future for themselves.

Headstrong Beverley tries compulsively to maintain control of everything around her, all while raising two children. Bookish Elsie fights to make a name for herself in the newsroom, working among men who sneer at her career goals. Glamorous Margot prefers partying to homemaking and devotes all her energy to upholding the appearance that everything is fine—anything to quell the shame from her husband’s deceit.

They know people look at them and think only one thing: How could they
not have known what their husbands were doing? How much are they to blame? And yet when a string of local killings hits the news, the three women—underestimated, overlooked, shrewd—decide to get to work. After all, who better to catch a killer than those who have shared their lives and homes with one?

At once a riveting portrayal of shattered trust and a story of gripping suspense,
The Secret Lives of Murderers' Wives is a testament to the intricacies of women’s lives and how the deep bonds of female friendship can empower, uplift, and lead us to endure.

My Review - 4 1/2 of 5 stars -

4 1/2 stars. I enjoyed the trip into the 60's, the references, etc. as well as a look at what the lives of those who were married to killers were living. Beverley, Elsie, and Margot did their own investigations, found clues, and tried to help others. I had an inkling as to who was doing the killing, but it did take me until about 2/3 of the way through the story. Some parts were slow due to the in-depth descriptions of the three friends and their pasts, but it was definitely an interesting story.

Ebook Review: The Highlander's Wicked Ways (Spellbound Hearts #3) by Julie Johnstone

Blurb

When Murieall Buchannan asks for my protection, I offer her the only thing I have left—a bargain carved from sin.

This Spellbound Hearts romance features:

- A cursed heroine bound to dangerous magic

- A grief-stricken, morally gray Highlander hero
- A forbidden bargain / sinful deal for protection
- Forced proximity and a one-bed arrangement
- Witchcraft, curses, and perilous magic
- A slow-burn, emotionally intense romance
- A redemption arc for a broken hero
- High heat, high stakes, and deep emotional healing
- A guaranteed happily-ever-after

Murieall
I stole a witch’s magic goblet to save my mama’s life and paid for my folly with a curse that binds me to the dead.

The voices never stop. Their grief claws at my mind, and now people whisper I’m mad. My betrothal has been shattered, my reputation destroyed, and time is running out to break the curse before I lose everything.

The witch’s answer to my pleas for forgiveness is as cruel as it is impossible: I must make the wickedest Scot in the Highlands feel again. Munro Ross is grief-hardened, sinful, and dangerous. He wants nothing to do with redemption, but to save myself, I must save him.

Entry into his domain comes at a wicked price: one month in his bed. I tell myself I can endure anything for freedom. What I don’t plan for is the honorable man I find under the dark surface, or the way his touch strips away my careful control, or how falling for him may cost me far more than the curse ever could.

Munro
I lost my wife. I lost my son. And I buried my heart with them.

I don’t believe in witches. I don’t believe in forgiveness. And I don’t save desperate women who come begging at my door. So when Murieall Buchannan asks for my protection, I give her the only thing I still know how to offer—temptation wrapped in shadows and desire.

She’s meant to be a distraction, a fleeting indulgence to dull my pain. But by day, I see a patient, brave woman. And night after night, the ice I’ve built around my heart begins to crack. When she starts whispering truths I was never meant to hear, I realize this bargain may destroy us both.

Because if I let myself feel again, I’ll have to face the lies and betrayals that surround us. And the secrets that unite Murieall and me may be the very ones that tear us apart.

My Review - 5 of 5 stars -

This story touched my heart. Two broken people living with secrets, pain, and death were brought together by a curse. Murieall tired of her curse and wanted it gone. To do so, she had to heal Munro. She was determined, loving, gave of herself though she kept her secrets. Munro was so deep in his pain that he was not truly living. Secrets, manipulation, and pain made him a weaker man than he was. I loved how she brought the light into his life, how he began to take his place in the clan once again, how they gave up their secrets and more to each other. I cried when he reacted to the news of her curse and pushed her away. My fingers were crossed that she would keep her curse/gift. I did not want to stop reading this book. Another good one by this author.

Ebook Review: Killer Friends (The Bloodstone Series #4) by Chris Karlsen

Blurb

The next book in the Bloodstone Murders series is a historical thriller that received the Chanticleer award for global suspense.

Henrietta Newell stormed into the detective bureau. She claimed her adult son was missing and feared for his safety. The detectives attempted to reassure her that the absence of a bachelor in his thirties, in a city like London, wasn’t extraordinary. Despite their efforts, she insisted an investigation be conducted, reminding them of her political connections.
Detective Rudyard Bloodstone and his partner were told to look into the matter. Their investigation reveals evidence of suspicious and unusual activity but no clues regarding the man’s disappearance. The few leads they develop take them from the world of wealthy families and into the secret society of sexual peculiarities.

The detectives discover the victim didn’t simply disappear. He was murdered. They have the evidence except for one problem, they’re missing the victim’s body.

My Review - 4 of 5 stars -

I found this story interesting, historical murder with plenty of interaction of police departments. I liked the fact that there were a couple of other cases, one helped the main case while the other showed how smart a woman can be as a PI. Ruddy and Archie got involved because of the class of the missing person. They were willing to work with others and look at every clue that came along. With a death that brought some sadness to the story, I kept reading to see if the culprit would get caught. I also enjoyed the personal side of these characters and loved the connection between Ruddy and Honeysuckle.

My Review - 4 1/2 of 5 stars -

4 1/2 stars. I really enjoyed Emma and her interactions/friendships with Cecile, Luc, and Inspector LeFevre. The setting of Paris was well done, at a time when the future was starting to outshine the past. Some details seemed a bit repetitive, but the mystery and clue hunt was engrossing. I was pulled in, especially toward the end as we got closer to the solution. There were plenty of clues to follow, danger to avoid or protective from. The inspector was so cute as he fought his upright, beyond question, attitude with his feelings for Emma. I look forward to the next in this series.

Audiobook Review: Charming a Cursed Highlander (Highlander Shifters #2) by Vonda Sinclair, narrator Dave Gillies

Blurb

The myth and magic of the Scottish Highlands comes to life in this fun, historical, fantasy, paranormal romance.

A Determined Lass...

Since Catriona MacCain was a young girl, she has been in love with Torr MacElrath, but he doesn't seem to realize she exists. His recently acquired curse of shapeshifting into a kelpie, or water horse, at night doesn't deter her. Brodie, her older brother and the MacCain chief, is also entangled in the curse. He has abandoned the clan, and in his absence, their mother negotiates a marriage alliance for Cat with the cruel Chief MacPeter in exchange for his protection. After rejecting the atrocious marriage plans and learning what will destroy the curse, Cat runs away to find Torr and gain his help.

A Cursed Highlander...

Torr, trapped by the curse, hates his dark and lonely existence. With her ginger hair and sunny enthusiasm, Cat bursts into his life like a fiery explosion. He remembers her as a wee lass and can hardly believe the beautiful, tempting young woman Cat has grown into at age twenty. He wants to help her escape marriage to a vicious beast, but how will he resist her, especially when she's determined to captivate him and shatter his curse? Falling for her would surely destroy his friendship with Brodie and bring destruction upon their clans.

The previous year...

Lady Wilona MacRae has been honing her malicious witchery skills for years. When three friends—Gavin MacTavish, Torr MacElrath, and Brodie MacCain fight in a battle in which her son is killed, she accuses them of murder and condemns them to live under a curse for the rest of their lives. Against their will, they transform into beasts daily.

My Review - 5 of 5 stars -

This was an interesting tale, full of magic, curses, loyalty, and love. Catriona wanted to help end the curse after reading a note for her brother, one of the cursed. This took her to Torr, the other cursed, who she cared about for a long time. I loved how easily she accepted Torr's Kelpie and went with her feelings. A little trickery moved their relationship faster, and it was amusing that she did not realize at first when it wasn't the potion. Torr tried to resist the attraction as he did not know he could be released from the curse. He was so careful with Catriona and gave into his impulses. Great story.
Dave Gillies brought the characters to life with his wonderful narration. He put emotion into the story, making it that much more enjoyable.

My Review - 5 of 5 stars -

The setting and premise for this story kept me turning pages. Grace was determined to succeed on her own, not knowing what danger actually surrounded her. She was smart, hurt by her past, and honest. Lucien's story was hard to believe for her, but I enjoyed how she accepted the reality as got to know him and even did research. Lucien had pretty much given up on finding the key to his situation. He was mostly patient in waiting for Grace to figure out what was going on. I loved the dogs, the voodoo aspect, the paranormal side, even the cat and horses. The ending was a twist I did not see coming, and I loved it.

My Review - 5 of 5 stars -

I had to get to the end of this story. The pace was swift, the book hard to put down, and the love was strong. Arianna was a force to be reckoned with, did not want to sit on the sidelines, and wanted to have an adventure like her sisters. She tossed aside propriety for this adventure. Christian was looking for Arianna but got more than he expected. I loved how he accepted that she was going to be part of this adventure, and he was so protective and caring with her. The gem was not what I was expecting, but I really enjoyed how this played out. The ending was unexpected though, not what I was thinking. Enjoyable story and series.

Books I Plan to Read August 9-15 and last week's results

Happy weekend to all, The weather here is hot and quite confused. Some days there were torrential downpours, nasty thunderstorms, and then...
