Release: 700 Senses of Summer (The Romantics #2) by Maggie Gates, narrators Rose Dioro and Anthony Palmini

700 Senses of Summer by Maggie Gates is now live in audio!

Narrated by: Rose Dioro & Anthony Palmini

Aurora Whitlock hit rock bottom.

Broke, single, and mourning her career going up in smoke, she decides to kick-start her new life by renovating the bones of an old beach house hidden along the Carolina coast.

What a cliché—inheriting a fixer-upper from a deceased relative. That kind of thing only happens in books.

But beggars can’t be choosers. The Old Whitlock Place, and all its secrets, is home sweet home for the summer.

Jack Wharton didn’t expect to find a summertimer squatting in the dilapidated mansion next door.

As a career firefighter tasked with protecting Cedar Island, North Carolina, he’s seen a thing or two. But he’s never seen anything quite like her.

Painting walls and fixing floors in the middle of summer shouldn’t be that hard to handle. But the temperature isn’t the only thing that’s hot. Can Jack and Aurora’s sizzling romance stand the heat? Or will the secrets they uncover consume them?

Blitz: The Booker (Sam Quinton Mystery Series #6) by Kevin R. Doyle with an excerpt and a giveaway

THE BOOKER

by Kevin R. Doyle

GENRE:  Mystery

BLURB:

Sam Quinton hadn't thought much about the entertainment business for several years. His days as a minor celebrity were part of his past, which was fine with him. But when a Hollywood producer walks through the doors of his gym and offers to create a TV show around his life, Sam doesn't say no right away.

Then the producer's partner ends up dead in her hotel room, and Sam has to put on his private detective hat to straighten things out. It doesn't take long to realize the TV offer may not have been exactly what it was cracked up to be. Suddenly, a whole lot of seemingly bad folks are gunning for Sam. Forget his budding Hollywood career. He has to do everything possible to keep himself and his client alive.

EXCERPT:

I’d only made it three steps inside before they both looked over at the same time. Nichols waved me over.

I’d barely known Wendy Truell, but the faintness of our acquaintance didn’t matter. It’s still a shock to see someone seemingly in the prime of life with a bullet hole in their face.

She had on a silk crimson robe with black piping and, as far as could be told, nothing else. She was slumped so her head rested on the pillow at the end of the couch. Except for the blood and gore around her, she could have stretched out to take a nap.

Far as I could tell, it was a single shot. The front of her face wasn’t too messed up, except for the entry wound, with most of the damage apparent from where the slug or slugs exited the back of her head.

A highball glass containing some sort of mixed drink sat on the coffee table next to an open laptop with a blank screen.

The originally green couch pillow was drenched in red.

“Jesus,” I said.

“Nichols tells me you knew the woman,” Santiago said by way of greeting.

“More like met. I probably spent a grand total of forty-five minutes with her, if that.”

Santiago jerked his head, and the three of us walked back out into the hallway and down a ways to talk in private.

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

A retired high-school teacher and former college instructor, Kevin R. Doyle is the author of five novels in the Sam Quinton mystery series, all published by Camel Press. He’s also written four crime thrillers, including And the Devil Walks Away and The Anchor, and one horror novel, The Litter, along with numerous short horror stories published in small magazines over the years. The first Quinton book, Squatter’s Rights, was nominated for the 2021 Shamus award for Best First PI Novel. A lifelong Midwesterner, Doyle currently resides in Missouri and has loosely based the city of Providence in the Quinton books on Columbia.

About the Author

It’s never too late to make my dreams come true. I was lucky to be born on the southern shores of the Mediterranean Sea, specifically in Alexandria. My summers were spent on the beach, enjoying the sunshine, the original surfboards/paddle boards, and the game of sand pickleball before it even made it to the US.

Not having TVs, I read many books, especially wartime ones, Ian Flemings’s early James Bond novels, John Le Carre, Agatha Christie, Maurice LeBlanc (Arsene Lupin), and other detective/mystery-type books. For school, we had to read all the French Classics. I was always intrigued by how the characters always managed to resolve their problems.

At the Age of 19, I came to California as a foreign student. After graduating with an engineering degree, I was able to obtain my permanent residency. I never looked back. My mother was able to join me, but unfortunately, my father passed away.

Once I graduated with a Mechanical Engineering degree, I joined an International Engineering and Construction Company and spent all my working time with them. What was great is that the company moved me to many work projects around the world, where I spent an average of a couple of years on each. My wife joined me on some of these assignments.

But my love for writing was always with me. During my stay abroad, I wrote a philosophical book and many articles for local newspapers and the Laguna Beach weekly issues, comparing life in Laguna Beach with life in Indonesia. I wrote articles for the company’s monthly newsletter, as well as for other publications.

I recently decided to use a “nom de plume”/pseudonym for my writings. My real name is Jean-Pierre Zacaropoulos. Having a last name starting with a “Z” had me called upon in classes either as one of the last ones or one of the first one. It was always a guessing game. But usually having an A or B will push you to the top (Ha! Ha!). So I decided to choose a “B”

Now, I have a little bit more time, so I decided to make my long-time desire come true. I wrote my mystery/romance novel, which will be followed shortly after by a sequel.

Book Review: Kill Pocahontas by Ray Anthony Morris

 Blurb

Hallee Landry is a promising young Tsawwassen First Nations attorney and litigator with an enviable résumé and a bright future. At only twenty-seven years old, she is not a residential school survivor. Or is she? Everything she has understood to be true about her origins is challenged when she is kidnapped while in Kamloops to attend the annual Pow Wow. Now somebody wants her dead. But why? The perpetrators seem to be a confounding mix of low-level criminals and a sophisticated cadre of malefactors backed by someone high up at the Vatican. Hallee is bewildered to learn that her only allies are an elderly nun, a venerable old Catholic priest, and an Indigenous midwife. This motley crew of improbables faces long odds in unravelling a 50-year-old mystery before the opposing menacing forces erase history for good. Lurking in the shadows is a long-standing conspiracy of extortion, child abuse, kidnapping, and murder. The only clues on offer are an old drawing, a scratchy cassette tape, and a majestic totem pole. First-time novelist Ray Anthony Morris beckons us into the classroom and dares us to slip behind the curtain of an Indian residential school. Much like the backdrop of the mighty Fraser River, serpentining through the Canadian Rockies, this heroic story lifts our spirits on the wings of heart-choking tales of uncommon valour and then plunges us straight into the rollicking, white-water rush-ride of a sensational suspense thriller.

My Review - 4 1/2 of 5 stars -

4 1/2 stars. I want to say I enjoyed this book, but the subject was quite a complex and biased one. Out of horror came a close family with their friends to acknowledge that horror. Surrounded by danger, death threats, and more, the First Nations solved a mystery and brought justice to those who committed the horrors. I loved the details and history of the tragic events being included in the telling to fully understand. The relationships interconnecting brought a family feel to the story. Worth the read.

I received a copy through Goddess Fish Promotions, and this is my unsolicited review.

Book Review: The World's Greatest Detective and Her Just Okay Assistant (A Merritt and Blunt Mystery #1) by Liza Tully

Blurb

A brilliant Boomer detective and her ambitious Gen Z assistant try to get along in this delightful feel-good mystery.

Olivia Blunt is thrilled to be hired as assistant to the nationally renowned investigator Aubrey Merritt. She longs to become a valued contributor to the great detective’s work, but Merritt is a difficult, exacting boss, and the learning curve is steeper than she expected.

After weeks of boring computer work, Olivia is finally invited to join Merritt on an important case. On the night of her sixty-fifth birthday party, Victoria Summersworth somehow fell over her balcony railing to her death on the rocky shore of Vermont’s Lake Champlain. She was a happy woman—rich, beloved, in love, and matriarch of the preeminent Summersworth family. The police ruled her death a suicide, but Victoria’s daughter Haley thinks it was murder.

Merritt and Olivia soon discover that the Summersworth family is complicated web of lies, ambitions, and resentments. As the list of suspects grows, Olivia makes one apparent mistake after another. When she blunders into a truly dangerous situation, she realizes Merritt might be right: she might be in over her head with this whole detective thing…or she might be unravelling a mystery even bigger than the one they started with.

My Review - 4 1/2 of 5 stars -

4 1/2 stars. I enjoyed this story with plenty of twists and surprises. There were a lot of characters and different family dynamics. Clues were there along with red herrings. I loved Olivia's confidence in her ability to be a private investigator, even as she found that she was not as observant as she thought. Her determination to show what she could do led to some answers. Ms. Merritt was very strict and adamant about her expectations, even as she was taught Olivia. Humor added to the story, keeping the story moving along.

I received a copy through Netgalley, and this is my unsolicited review.

Excerpt:

“Knuck!” I demanded. “What happened?”

At first, I wondered if Knuck was in shock. He just stood there, unmoving, staring down at the dead hoodlum. But I’d seen shock before—the disbelief in the eyes, the slack-jawed absence of feeling. This wasn’t that. This was a whole lot more casual.

Knuck faced me and shrugged. “Had to do it,” he said simply, holstering his revolver. “I guess we’d better call the police after all.

Review Tour: Day of Reckoning Seisan No Hi by Don S. Hunter with an excerpt, a giveaway, and my review

DAY OF RECKONING SEISAN NO HI

by Don S. Hunter

GENRE:  Mystery

BLURB:

Day of Reckoning Seisan no hi       follows a group psychotherapists guiding six individuals through the aftermath of unsolved murders that took their loved ones. As they grapple with grief, justice, and a flawed legal system, hidden tensions emerge, leading to unexpected revelations. Inspired by real-life experiences, this gripping novel delves into loss, resilience, and the pursuit of closure, keeping readers on edge with its twists and psychological depth.

EXCERPT:

Most group members arrived at the bereavement groups a little early to get coffee and chat a little with each other. Michael was a bit surprised that everyone came early this second session, and he had been a little uneasy about Micheline and Celia having to share their experiences towards the end of the first session, in a limited time. He had already decided that, though he usually began the second group by briefly sharing his story, he would ask them to take the floor first.

Michael was considering his initial impressions of the members in this group. As he took a deep, slow breath, he became aware of the odor of the church basement – a mix of furniture polish and a musty basement. This brought back memories of attending church with his parents and Josie when they were younger. He smiled as he recalled starting in a Presbyterian church when he was about five, and then an Anglican church at about seven, to then move to a Peoples church when he was twelve when his mom was pregnant with Josie.

A memory of first attending the Peoples church in Scarborough crept into his awareness. The preacher was ranting about how important it was to share our sins and ask forgiveness – we are all sinners, we all must repent – and gradually, people of all ages started crying, making their way to the front, yelling about their sin so the preacher could bless them, tell them that God forgives them, and then he would smack their foreheads with the heal of his hand, while two guys made sure no one fell … Michael had thought it was such a strange practice and had a vivid memory of a cute young girl about thirteen, crying and yelling as she made her way to the front, saying, “I let my boyfriend touch my breasts”. Michael had started to giggle, and his dad slapped him on the knee, “Stop that, you’re in church.” Michael had tried desperately to hold in his laugh, but he couldn’t and had to leave so he wouldn’t embarrass his parents.

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

Don is retired from his psychotherapy practice and lives in Toronto with his wife and partner of over fifty years and a nine-month-old Great Dane. His two grown sons, their partners, and four grandchildren all live close to each other and visit often.

My Review - 4 of 5 stars -

This was a different type of story for me. I wasn't sure what to expect, and I sure did not expect some of the twists. Therapy led to an acceptance via a dark means. Michael ran his group to help them come to terms with the deaths of their loved ones, to accept their deaths may never be avenged. The story was entertaining, though I felt there was too much emphasis put on describing the characters looking very similar to celebrities. For me, that was a little off putting.

This was interesting, the first I have read by this author. Maria went on a cruise with students and teachers, and found more than tourist sights. As the danger grew, clues led to more incidents and clues, red herrings, and surprise results. I enjoyed the story and found the recipes enticing.
