Excerpt

—“It’s likely the same guys,” Franklin whispered. “You need to go for help. Get word to Sergeant Blue Eyes.”

“I can’t go without you,” she said, and Franklin took her hand and pressed it against his side. When she pulled her hand away, it was wet and sticky.

“You’re bleeding!” she said, and Franklin’s nod was dimly visible in the darkness lit only by the fires. “I’ll find something to help,” Marin said, and crawled through the hogan’s entrance, searching by feel until she found several pieces of soft clothing or bedding.

“Hold this over the wound and press,” she said, making a thick pad. She tied the pad around Franklin using a length of bale twine, and he gasped, then sat taking deep breaths.

“Sorry, we need to get the bleeding stopped,” she whispered.

Franklin took another breath and gave a low whistle. A horse broke away from the bunched group and came close to the rails, snorting softly.

“Here is your friend, Otekah,” Franklin said and ducked into the corral. “You must take her and go.”

“Go where?”

Franklin didn’t answer. He took a rope from a corral post and ran the rope behind Otekah’s ears, made a quick turn around the mare’s muzzle, and looped a knot into the side of the make-shift halter. He pushed the end of the rope into Marin’s hands.

“No,” she said. “I can’t leave you. You’re hurt.”

“They’ll soon come looking,” Franklin said. “Trust Otekah to find the way. She’ll be going home.”

“I can’t find my way in the dark!” Marin said.

“She knows the way. There is only one gate to open; our home is near the canyon’s end. You will be able to climb out.”

“No … ” Marin said.

“Climb up to the rim road. Bring back help.”

“Franklin, I can’t climb the canyon wall!”

“There are handholds to guide you,” he said, and he pushed something cold, round, and metallic into her hands … a flashlight.

“I shot one of those Indian kids,” said a man’s deep voice and she and Franklin froze, sinking deeper into the hogan’s shadows. “He ran over here.”

“Lay off. I’m not about to get trampled trying to find him,” a second man answered.

“He’s in here, I know it.”

“He’s not going anywhere. He’s got nowhere to run with this hut built up against the canyon wall.”

“You can either come out or you can bleed to death!” the first man shouted, and there was a sudden blast of gunfire.

Marin yelped, and Otekah reared, yanking the rope from her hands and whirling away. Yuma, his gray coat barely visible, whistled shrilly and kicked against the corral poles until the saplings shuddered.

“I said lay off, you idiot! A pole fence won’t hold half-ton horses! You’ll get us trampled! You don’t even know if the kid’s in there.”

The first man raised his voice. “You hear that, Injun boy? We’re gonna start shooting your horses if you don’t come out!”

“Stow it, Jack! You start shooting and these horses will go crazy. That kid’s not going anywhere. We need to get back to the prisoners.”

“Prisoners,” Marin breathed when the men walked away. “We have to stay and help them.”

“No. You must go, shadi,” Franklin said, making a soft clucking noise until Otekah once more came close, tossing her head as the other horses restlessly circled the corral, stamping and blowing. “My beauty,” Franklin murmured, picking up the trailing rope and looping it around Otekah’s neck.

“This is a bad idea,” Marin said, but she climbed between the corral poles to lean against Otekah’s warmth. The horses were bunched together, pressing hard against the gate poles, anxious to escape, eager to run. Still …

“I’d never forgive myself if you and the others … ”

“You must bring help, tell the Sergeant what has happened.”

There was no one else to go.

When Franklin again pushed the flashlight into her hands, she took it and shoved it into her waistband, then caught Otekah’s mane and rolled onto the mare’s back, catching up the rope in one hand.

Franklin murmured something that sounded like a prayer and slid a pole from the top of the gate. Carefully he lowered one end to the ground, then reached for the next pole and did the same. Even with only two poles down, the horses began to push into the gap, Otekah with them, and Marin clutched the halter rope breathing in the familiar scent of horse—dust, dried grass, musky sweat.

“I’m not sure I can guide her.”

“Just stay on,” Franklin returned.

Marin wrapped the rope tight around her hand and twisted both hands into Otekah’s mane, aware of a familiar rush of excitement, that stomach-clenching tension when Dandy’s muscles had bunched beneath her the second before the rodeo arena gate flew open and they shot forward. She’d done this a hundred times or more, and she bent low to Otekah’s neck, gathering focus.

“Ready … ” Franklin whispered, and he eased the last pole to the ground.

“Franklin, I … ” Marin began, but Franklin stepped back, gave a shrill, yipping yell, and slapped Otekah across the rump, waving his hat as the horses surged forward.—

Blitz: Blood in the Shadows by Hawk MacKinny with an excerpt and a giveaway

BLOOD IN THE SHADOWS

by Hawk MacKinney

GENRE:  Suspense/Thriller

BLURB:

When marine buddy, Gulfport, Mississippi Sheriff asks Craige Ingram for help, Ingram and Buckingham Parish patrolman ‘Badger’ Thomas Boback find themselves in the summertime dogdays of the humid Gulf Coast. With crowded beaches and an undermanned staff, a routine investigation soon becomes anything but routine when indescribable body parts start showing up along the surf, in beachfront cabins, half-buried in bayou wetlands, stashed under freeway bridges, and across county lines. Craige’s search for answers to identifying victims and killer among the crowds of tourists and skin-and-sun partygoers soon makes it obvious the victims have no connection with one another—until conflicting DNA results and haunting premonitions resembling the warnings Craige’s grannie often had become part of the investigation. The jigsaw of abandoned cross-kin offspring begin a horrifying Gordian Knot tangle that threatens anyone who approaches the shadowy ancient wreck of an old mansion - an asylum from a lost time.

EXCERPT:

Craige grabbed a gloved handful of matted briers; pried away the snags off his camo field pants, “County maps show a road once came through here to the main house.” Fletch said, “The only time I was ever out here to Chateau Bois was with my dad; the paths and roads were clear-cut with none of this scrum growth. We could be standing in the middle of the dirt and gravel buggy lane and never know it. From what I can see of the house, it looks about the same. Except for that big oak near the porch in the front yard, there were no trees. Yard stayed clean cut. There was a fancy wrought iron fence. You’d think there’d be what’s left of a gate or fence in here somewhere.”

“Don’t take long in this humidity for rust to take hold of iron and all manner of critters digging and chewing. Mold and big black carpenter ants, wood bees, powder-puff beetles, pesky Argentine ants—untreated fence posts and any wood don’t last long.” Craige shoved against the twist of honeysuckle runners dangling from the scrub oak and sweet gum trees. Yellow Jackets buzzed out from a jostled nest. Craige froze. “Stand still.” Only his eyes moved, “Don’t run. Somewhere in these blackberries we’ve stirred us a Yellow Jacket nest. You run; the whole nest will swarm your butt. Keep still and they’ll buzz around; go on off.” He braced himself for stings that never came. Angry buzzes cleared out; a few hung around, then were gone. After a few more shoves through the overgrowth the house emerged from its leafy shroud and towered in front of them. Fletch stopped, “I don’t remember it being so big. It’s been more than twenty years, maybe longer, since I last saw this place.”

“Must have been quite a showplace in its day.” Craige let his eyes roam the shuttered windows on the upper floors, several loose panels dangled from attic gables. Most of the upper windows were shuttered or boarded. Leaning back, he looked to the roof eaves and overhangs.

“Considerable mildew and wood-rot around the window frames, but it doesn’t look too bad for being empty all these years. Always struck me odd how a house not lived in pines away to rack and ruin as though it knows no one cares about it.” Fletch walked around one side. “Looks the same over this way, too. No sign St. Jacques drove out here, no tracks, none of the weeds and scrub growth knocked down.” “He would likely have left the car back at the highway. No way he could get a car in here. If he’d tried, the vehicle would still be stuck in that drainage washout we jumped.”

Craige eased a step up onto the boards of the porch. Gingerly added his full weight; felt the rotted boards crackle, but they held. He wasn’t about to let rotten boards set him straddling a ball-busting floor support. Took another step; his boots echoed leaded thuds on the long unused wood.

From the corner window on the second-floor suspicious eyes peeked between the dust-covered spider-webbed slatted shutters. The eyes grew wide, breathing quickened when Craige disappeared from view beneath the rusty tin porch roof. He glanced toward Jeffus, finger held straight against his pursed lips to be still. It was too late to get Jeffus downstairs. Jeffus shuffled slowly into a corner; retreated into the shadows and hunkered. Hardly any daylight peeked through the heavy, age-rotted drapes with only a dim reflection in the smudged broken mirror in the once-upon-a-time stuffy shuttered bedroom.

Book Review: Kill Pocahontas by Ray Anthony Morris

 Blurb

Hallee Landry is a promising young Tsawwassen First Nations attorney and litigator with an enviable résumé and a bright future. At only twenty-seven years old, she is not a residential school survivor. Or is she? Everything she has understood to be true about her origins is challenged when she is kidnapped while in Kamloops to attend the annual Pow Wow. Now somebody wants her dead. But why? The perpetrators seem to be a confounding mix of low-level criminals and a sophisticated cadre of malefactors backed by someone high up at the Vatican. Hallee is bewildered to learn that her only allies are an elderly nun, a venerable old Catholic priest, and an Indigenous midwife. This motley crew of improbables faces long odds in unravelling a 50-year-old mystery before the opposing menacing forces erase history for good. Lurking in the shadows is a long-standing conspiracy of extortion, child abuse, kidnapping, and murder. The only clues on offer are an old drawing, a scratchy cassette tape, and a majestic totem pole. First-time novelist Ray Anthony Morris beckons us into the classroom and dares us to slip behind the curtain of an Indian residential school. Much like the backdrop of the mighty Fraser River, serpentining through the Canadian Rockies, this heroic story lifts our spirits on the wings of heart-choking tales of uncommon valour and then plunges us straight into the rollicking, white-water rush-ride of a sensational suspense thriller.

My Review - 4 1/2 of 5 stars -

4 1/2 stars. I want to say I enjoyed this book, but the subject was quite a complex and biased one. Out of horror came a close family with their friends to acknowledge that horror. Surrounded by danger, death threats, and more, the First Nations solved a mystery and brought justice to those who committed the horrors. I loved the details and history of the tragic events being included in the telling to fully understand. The relationships interconnecting brought a family feel to the story. Worth the read.

I received a copy through Goddess Fish Promotions, and this is my unsolicited review.

Excerpt:

30. AWAKENING

GABRIELLA

I hit the ground with a thud and felt pain on my left side where Golden had slapped me flying over the edge of the hill. The bear ran at Matteo, and I heard him yell, “Run, Gabriella!”

With abandon, I rolled down the steep hill unable to stop myself. Tumbling over and over, I glanced off trees and came to a rest far down the hill. I lay dazed and confused. Various sized boulders were all over the hill and at the bottom. Miraculously, I had missed all of them.

I had careened off a few trees and felt lucky, hardly able to move. I opened my eyes, lying face down in the dirt. Turning my head I looked straight into the eyes of a small white mouse that stood on its haunches looking at me while sniffing the air. He ran off, and I felt like telling him to come back. It reminded me of a time long ago when I raised pet mice, and they all became my friends. When I came home from school, they would all gather around the cage until I allowed them out to sit on my shoulders as I walked around the house. My stepmom thought I was crazy and was afraid of the harmless creatures. But I needed their company. And I wanted this wild mouse to stay with me now. I crawled to the nearest tree and leaned up against it. Checking my body, I had no serious injuries, just multiple bruises. Still in shock, I gazed up to the top of the hill and noticed the great head of Golden staring down at me. I reached for the .44, but it was gone, taken by the miners. I sighed, looked up, and Golden turned and disappeared from my sight.

I sat still for a while thinking of the tragedy that had just unfolded, and felt devastated that I could not help Matteo, a loss I did not wish to endure. Now that he was gone, my affection for him poured out, and I began to cry. I wished I had treated him with more fondness but was unable to ditch my emotional cage. Never had I met a man such as Matteo, so kind, so attentive, and always there for me.

What a fool, and now he was gone, and I must forge on, but I felt like dying instead. I thought for a few minutes and decided to climb back up and deal with his body. He would do that for me. If Golden was there, then I would perish with Matteo. Gathering my senses, I stood and began the arduous climb to the top. Trying to remain as quiet as possible. I rested every twenty feet, trying to maintain strength to avoid tumbling to the bottom again. I looked at myself. I was covered with dirt and pine needles, and I reached up and felt my hair. It was a rat’s nest. I muttered to myself that I must blend in well with my environment.

Halfway up, I paused and began to think, which in my case could be dangerous. I had run from my past in a rampaging effort to locate something to fulfill myself. I did find extreme value and reward in learning the fine art of fly-fishing and becoming adept at teaching it. I’d studied and mastered the requirements of becoming a dedicated ranger. I’d learned to handle and shoot a gun, something this model never even imagined.

In so many ways, I had accomplished my goals and felt fantastic but was still unfulfilled. Yet often the answer is so obvious that it can’t be seen by someone looking too hard. It’s like someone must drop the proverbial brick on my head. Naturally, even obsessively, I searched and consciously avoided people and events countless times, dismissing everything and everyone while always seeming happy.

Perched on the side of this hill, covered in dirt and pine needles, it dawned on me that whenever folks act happy all the time, it means the opposite, sadness. Rubbing my eyes to clear the tears, I now understood the glaring solution to my frustrations, and it had been swirling around me over the past few weeks, making me laugh and cry with intellectual compassion and humor meshed with Matteo’s own tragic tale. And now he was gone as fast as he had arrived. Pouring his personal life onto me was like pure mountain stream water bathing my mind of negativity and ultimately, and shockingly, it spurred me to enter his tent and reveal some of my discombobulated life.

Trying again to justify the fact that I had known him for only a few weeks failed miserably because something about him had eased my pain with the noninvasive power of persuasion. I had a chance to exorcise my demons by simply accepting this warm, blessed being who stood patiently in front of me, washing me with humor, with keen discourse, and with compliments. But no, I retreated again to my defensive position and screwed myself in the process while discouraging him at the same time. Although he still stood in front of my blinded eyes. Sighing, I began to climb again, quiet as a mouse. The task ahead of me seemed insurmountable and deadly, but I pushed ahead.

As I approached the hilltop, I sank into cold fear created by the realization of my impending end of life, and here I was about to experience it for the third time in one day! I knew bears seldom abandon their kills for fear of others pilfering their catch. I hoped the .44 magnum would be close as it would be my only chance. Stopping a few feet from the edge, I lay quietly in the dirt and pine needles, and oddly I felt remarkably comfortable. I smiled at the frivolity of my effort, sighed, and gathered my wits for the obvious mayhem that lay ahead. I had hoped that most of Matteo would be intact for a decent funeral, as it was his wish to be buried in the remote woods of our majestic wilderness.

My heart skipped a few beats as I cautiously peeked over the hill and first saw multiple body parts scattered about. I suppressed a scream and pulled back gasping for breath until I calmed down. Gathering my strength, I stuck my whole head up and scanned the setting. My heart jumped as my gaze settled on Matteo slumped over still tied to the tree! I noticed well-picked bones scattered near him, but no blood on Matteo, and no sign of the killer bear. I refrained from yelling at Matteo as I noticed a glitter to the right, the .44 magnum near the torn remains of our dead captors. After hesitating for a final look around, I bounded over the hill and rushed to the gun. No bear. I ran to Matteo, he looked up, startled, and I hugged him repeatedly.

My Review - 4 of 5 stars -

This story was interesting. Sophie tried to be the best in her military training until danger, secrets, and death pushed her to look at those around her. There were plenty of twists and turns, action and thrilling moments. The story did not end but set up the next. I enjoyed the story, though at times, I felt it slowed due to a little too much detail. Overall, this was a good book.

I received a copy through RABT Book Tours, and this is my unsolicited review.
