Murder on the Steel Pier

A Tess Mancini Time Travel Mystery

by Rosie Genova

Publication Date: March 31, 2025

Genres: An Adult Time Travel Historical Mystery (with cozy noir elements)

Publisher: Two Roses Press

The morning after a blowout thirty-fifth birthday celebration in Atlantic City, crime reporter and party girl Tess Mancini wakes up in an unfamiliar place—1955. Bread is eighteen cents a loaf, Ike occupies the White House, and the Boardwalk is crawling with vintage cars and vintage wise guys. A bewildered Tess is sure of only two things: One, she’s not crazy, and two, the clothes are fabulous. And somehow, she’s living the life of her Great Aunt Theresa, who disappeared decades before Tess’s birth.

In her 1950s existence, Tess is a reporter for the local newspaper, living and working at a boarding house owned by her Zia Antonetta, an Italian immigrant with secrets of her own. Tess also discovers that Theresa has a kid brother, teenaged troublemaker Val Mancini—also known as Tess’s paternal grandfather. Though determined to return to her own time, Tess’s curiosity takes over. What happened to the first Theresa Mancini? And is Tess’s trip through time somehow connected to her aunt’s fate?

But when young Val is accused of murdering a boarding house guest, a Nazi in hiding, Tess ends up with two investigations on her hands, and though desperate to leave the Nifty Fifties, she’s stuck in time until she can prove Val’s innocence. As she searches for answers, she finds allies in a dishy police detective and a suspiciously charming fellow reporter. She also crosses paths with a Mid-Century icon of science—possibly the one person who can help her get back home—but not until she finds a way to keep her grandfather off Death Row.

Because before Tess can get back to the future … she needs to make sure she has one.

Excerpt:

From Chapter 1, Murder on the Steel Pier

Someone was smoking a cigarette. I sniffed, and spikes of pain started at my chin and shot through the top of my head. Oh God, make it stop, and I promise I’ll never touch another drop of tequila. Being another year older was bad enough—did I have to be punished for it, too? My nose twitched as the smoke teased my nostrils and caressed my olfactory nerves. I’d quit a month ago, but the longing for a cig came roaring back.

With my eyes still closed, and my head nailed to the pillow, I had one coherent thought: This is supposed to be a smoke-free hotel. As far as I knew, it was also bird-free, but the chirps and twitters assailing my ears were clearly coming from feathered creatures. Then again, it’s Atlantic City. Maybe the birds were part of the hotel show. Ever so slowly, I slid my hands from under the covers and cupped them over my ears.

“Please, birdies,” I whispered. “Stop singing.” Geez, they sounded close enough to be in my room. I exhaled, yoga style. C’mon, Tess, time to open your eyes. You can do it. Actually, I couldn’t, as my lashes were glued together. (Had I slept in my make-up? Not a good sign.) Still covering my ears against the piercing bird song, I fluttered my left eyelid and squinted.

Big, fuchsia-colored roses seemed to scream at me from the wall. And sun—blinding, eyeball-searing sun—streamed in through an uncovered window. And not a hotel window bolted shut and draped to keep out that awful light, but a wooden one with glass panes. And across the top, a ruffly white curtain.

Okay, not my hotel. So where was I? My empty stomach grew queasy; I wouldn’t have gone home with a stranger. Though I did remember a cute blond guy playing the slots next to me, but it was all so … blurry. I eased open the other eye. Across the room was a vanity table draped in more white ruffles. Somehow, I doubted the blond guy lived here.

This place was obviously some kind of historic inn or something, but that still didn’t explain how I’d gotten here. I looked down at the sheets, also decorated with roses. Only these were little yellow ones. Somebody sure liked her florals.

“So weird,” I muttered. Hands shaking, eyes half closed, I felt around for my phone, but my fingers landed on a string of beads. I let go of the necklace and blinked hard, trying to ignore the little flashes of pain behind my eyes. Next to me was an old-fashioned nightstand; on it was a lamp with a frilly pink shade, an analog alarm clock ticking loudly, and the “necklace,” which had a cross hanging from it. A face stared at me from a black-and-white photo. I shifted closer, peering at a guy with slicked-back hair, thick brows, and dark-lashed eyes. Across the bottom of the picture was a name, signed in blue ink. I frowned at the image. Who the heck was Tyrone Power? Was he someone’s boyfriend? Or part of the décor?

Hangover and rubber legs be damned, I had to get moving and find my phone. But before I could get a big toe out from under the covers, a knock sounded at the door. I sat up in the strange bed, holding my throbbing head as though it were a soft-boiled egg.

“Tess? Are you awake yet?” The voice on the other side of the door had a slight Irish brogue. “Can I come in, then?”

“Yes,” I croaked. Whoever she was, she knew my name. Despite the sunlight, the room was chilly, and I huddled under the cotton blankets as the woman bustled in holding a small tray. I sniffed coffee and toast, and when she set it down on the nightstand, my stomach gurgled audibly.

“Now,” she said, wiping her hands on her apron, “we served breakfast some time ago, and when you didn’t come down, I knew you’d be oversleepin’ again.  Your auntie will have my hide and your own if you don’t get down to that kitchen.” She crossed her ample arms and sent me a stern look. “You know we don’t serve anyone in their rooms, guests or otherwise, but Carolina insisted I bring you your coffee. Said you’re no good without it.”

I looked up at a broad-shouldered woman in a green housedress. Over that was an apron in a loud, orange-and-green pattern of forks and spoons. Her thick white hair, twisted into a bun, was bright against her weathered skin. Her small dark eyes gave the impression of two raisins set in a gingerbread face. I’d never seen her before in my life.

“Sorry, Mrs. Flaherty.”  How did I know that? It surely must have been her name because she didn’t correct me. I sat up quickly, my mouth hanging open in shock, and the blankets slipped to my waist.

Mrs. Flaherty took a step closer to the bed and narrowed her eyes at me. “Just what are you wearing, missy?” What was I wearing? I glanced down at the cursive “T” stitched on the pocket of my favorite monogrammed PJs. Expensive ones. And why did she care? I opened my mouth to answer, but Mrs. F got there ahead of me. “They’re silk,” she hissed. “And black, for the Lord’s sake.”

“Uh huh,” I said slowly, wondering if she commented on the nightwear of all her guests. Still, I pulled the blankets up to my chin.

“Best not let your auntie see them. Don’t know how in the world you afford such things,” she grumbled. “Eat up quick now, and bring down that tray when you’re through.”

“Okay,” I whispered, staring at the door she closed behind her.

My Review - 4 of 5 stars -
This had the look and feel of a comic book. It was a bit gruesome towards the end, but the message was a strong one, showing faith can give on strength to face or deal with anything. The illustrations were beautiful, anime style.

Blitz: Bullets and Dandelions (Deputy Gemma Stone) by Gail Koger with an excerpt and a giveaway

BULLETS AND DANDELIONS

by Gail Koger

GENRE:  Romantic Suspense

BLURB:

My name is Tess Reynolds, and I’ll admit few people would think I’m a badass Army sniper called the Scorpion. Afterall, women snipers were unheard of in 1990. People look at me and see a petite blonde who is cute as a button. My father calls it my natural camouflage.

My time in the Middle East has been full of unforeseen complications. I have a rogue CIA agent trying to kill me and I caught the attention of a Force Recon Marine by the name of Alexander Stone. Wowzer! He’s hot but he’s also the biggest jackass I have ever met. To make things even more interesting, I need the Jackass’s help to stay alive.

EXCERPT:

“Turn around. You’re moving like a granny, and I need you in fighting form.” He pulled a tube of ointment out of his pocket.

The last thing I needed was Stone touching me, but he was right. I couldn’t fight like this. I turned around. I hoped I didn’t do something stupid, like kissing him.

“You took a bad fall. You’re damn lucky you didn’t break a leg.”

I snorted. “That would have really messed up my father’s plans.”

“Your father needs killing.” Stone massaged ointment into my neck and back.

My knees almost buckled. That felt so damn good. “He was a great father until my mother was killed. Now all he lives for is vengeance.” Shit! My voice came out all breathy.

“What happened?”  Stone’s hands slid down my left thigh as he worked the ointment into my colorful bruises.

My pussy pulsed and I fought back a moan. God, I loved the feel on his hands on my body. “She worked for Doctors Without Borders and was killed in a roadside bombing.” I balled my hands. Don’t touch him. Don’t touch him.

“That’s tough.” He switched to my other leg.

Oh, God. My panties were soaked, my nipples had hardened, and pure arousal thrummed in my veins. I wanted that bastard inside me.

“How does that feel?” He gave me a lewd wink.

“You know damn well how that feels.”

He grinned. “You’ve got the color back in your cheeks.”

“Gee, thanks.”

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

I was a 9-1-1 dispatcher for the Glendale Police Department and to keep from going totally bonkers – I mean people have no idea what a real emergency is. Take this for example: I answered, “9-1-1 emergency, what’s your emergency?” And this hysterical woman yelled, “My bird is in a tree.” Sometimes I really couldn’t help myself, so I said, “Birds have a tendency to do that, ma’am.” The woman screeched, “No! You don’t understand. My pet parakeet is in the tree. I’ve just got to get him down.” Like I said, not a clue. “I’m sorry ma’am but we don’t get birds out of trees.” The woman then cried, “But… What about my husband? He’s up there, too.” See what I had to deal with? To keep from hitting myself repeatedly in the head with my phone I took up writing.

My Review - 5 of 5 stars -

I really enjoyed this story. I loved Stormy's humor, her thought process, and her willingness to dig into the case as it came her way. The connection between her and her father added to the story as he taught her some of the tricks of investigation. She was so empathetic even when the victim and suspects were not as nice. With the help of friends, family, her lawyer tenant, and her detective friend, she was able to work her way through the clues to catch the culprit. A lot of fun and hard to put down.

The narration by Tiffany Williams was superb. She brought Stormy to life along with all the other characters, keeping them different so I knew who was speaking.

I received a copy of this audiobook, and this is my unsolicited review.

My Review - 4 of 5 stars -

Full of secrets, misdirection, danger, love and family. Emma had a lot on her plate, especially protecting her daughter and trying to keep the man she loved. She was a strong woman, though she hung onto her secrets tightly even from her husband. As things escalated and Emma found she could not trust those close to her, she felt more isolated. The ending was worthwhile. At times, I felt the story dragged, but overall, it was an interesting story.

I received an ARC, and this is my unsolicited review.

Book Review: Booker (Bluff Creek Brotherhood MC: Nomads) by Nat Logan

Blurb

A Biker On A Mission. The Woman He Never Forgot. A Chance Meeting at Motorcycles, Mobsters and Mayhem that could only happen in a romance novel.

Andrew “Booker” Thomson has always done what was required of him. His time in the Army taught him the value of following orders and brotherhood. The Bluff Creek Brotherhood MC has offered him a home but something is missing, if only he knew what. When his MC President offers him nomad status and asks him to check on one of their Originals who they haven’t had contact in a couple of weeks, Booker jumps at the chance. His appearance as a cover model at Motorcycles, Mobsters and Mayhem book signing will allow him to do both.

Alexandra Sullivan has made a life for herself working with romance authors. Spending the majority of the year on the road in her RV, she loves the nomadic lifestyle. She’s always wanted her own happily ever after but none of the men she’s met live up to her romance novel heroes or her high school boyfriend. When she’s face-to-face with the boy she had to leave before their junior prom, she wonders if this might be her second chance.

Before Booker can sweep Alexandra off her feet, he and his fellow nomads will need to help her confront the danger wreaking havoc in her and her mom’s life. Lexi and Booker will need a little assistance from the men and women of Bluff Creek Brotherhood MC and Saint’s Outlaws MC if they want to ride off into their own happily ever after.

My Review - 4 of 5 stars -

A reunion for Lexi and Booker. Lexi's family were military and moved a lot. Booker and Lexi had plans for after graduation when she moved away. Many years later, fate brought them back together. They found that their love for each other was still there, lying dormant. With danger surrounding Lexi and her mother, Booker and his MC brotherhood did everything to protect them. Lexi was strong and independent, but realized her own brother was not something she could handle on her own. I loved Booker's side hustle, how he was a bit embarrassed about it, yet he took pride in it and his connection to Lexi. I enjoyed the story, especially the real names and events.

Excerpt:

Andrew “Booker” Thomson thought through all the ways this weekend could go wrong. When War, the president of Bluff Creek Brotherhood MC, had asked Booker if he and his friend could check on one of the MC’s nomads, it had been the perfect excuse for what he needed to do this weekend. War had also offered for Booker and his friend Twist to officially become a part of Bluff Creek as nomads.

Booker had jumped at the chance because he loved Bluff Creek’s original Chapter in Kansas and their other Chapter in Cider Creek, Texas, but there was still something missing. He adored the brotherhood he’d found and the family aspect, but he wasn’t settled. It felt like his life wasn’t complete, but he didn’t believe he’d find what was missing in Bluff Creek. Becoming a nomad would allow him to search for that missing part of him while still having the brotherhood he’d missed after he got out of the Army.

For now, he and Twist would check on Compass. Twist was his best friend, and he couldn’t imagine going nomad without him. They’d served together, which is where Twist had gotten his name. Twist was short for Twister because he was amazing at predicting the weather. Twist loved storm chasing, so going nomad with Booker fit perfectly.

Since Booker booked them into the same hotel where he had the event at, he should be able to sneak away. In a perfect world. He and Twist were checking in late on Friday night. Booker was hoping their check-in was late enough that he’d miss anyone recognizing him in the hallways.

Booker didn’t know why he was hiding it from his club brothers. They readily accepted that he loved reading all novels but especially romance. It was just opening himself up and sharing that he also posed for photos that were used on romance book covers that he hadn’t been able to do yet.

He hadn’t even considered it until he’d contacted an author he liked about loving her books. Then he joined her ARC team, and she’d seen his picture. She’d begged him to model for her. And the rest was history. Once her friends had seen him on her covers, he’d had numerous people wanting photos. He’d traveled to a couple different photographers to have photos done. Now, he had extra income from the photo sales.

He did wish that Dex was with him and Twist. They’d served together before all retiring at the same time. Dex had fallen in love with Bluff Creek in Kansas and was helping with their gun range. It suited Dex, but Booker had felt strange when he and Twist rode away without their friend. Logically, he knew they all wouldn’t be together forever, but it had felt strange. They’d been their version of the three musketeers, but things changed. Twist motioned to Booker to pull over for gas. Booker guessed they were still about twenty minutes from the hotel.

He pulled in and filled up while Twist did the same at another pump.

“Yo, I’m beat. What do you say to us getting takeout then just heading to our rooms? I don’t think I’m up for partying tonight,” Twist said.

“I’m game. I want to wash the road dust off and sleep after filling my stomach. I’ve got that thing tomorrow until we meet Compass for supper. What are your plans?” Booker asked.

“We’re not that far from our Cider Creek Chapter. Since you’re busy, I thought I’d drive out there. Brew offered to give me a tour of their brewery.”

Booker breathed a sigh of relief that he wouldn’t have to worry about Twist seeing him at the signing. Though he shouldn’t relax too soon. Motorcycles, Mobsters and Mayhem was a huge signing with readers and authors who would definitely notice their cuts. He’d hope for the best and plan for the worst. He couldn’t see Twist giving him too much crap about being a cover model. He just really didn’t want the women back at Bluff Creek to know he modeled, or he’d never get any peace. He’d been lucky he hadn’t been found out yet because he’d seen one of the books he was a model for on one of the Franks sisters’ bookshelves.
