Excerpt:

“Did you see it?” whispered trembling, shocked voices of the surviving villagers.

They stared at Nancy, who could not find her own voice. Her eyes shifted between each person’s ash-streaked face. She took in their dated clothes and the burnt buildings and the snow. It was all too overwhelming.

“Did you see that winged man that saved us?”

“What was it?”

“Where did it come from?”

“Why did it save us?”

The voices of the people grew louder and louder as Nancy pressed back against the fountain. Why were they looking at her?

“You did see him, didn't you?” a smooth and velvety voice cooed from the shadows of a smoking building.

A robed figure emerged and sauntered toward Nancy. Her voice was feminine and her figure, even beneath the heavy cloak, was petite and slender. Nancy could see nothing of the person aside from a pair of honey eyes that glowed from beneath her hood. A ruby pendant swung from her throat which she tenderly cradled in her palm.

The mysterious figure looked around, but the winged beast had vanished as soon as she had arrived.

Irritably clicking her tongue, the woman advanced toward Nancy, but her movements were so smooth and elegant that it looked as though she had glided on air.

At first, Nancy was not sure what to make of the approaching robed figure, but as the person got closer, Nancy found it hard to breathe. She clutched at her throat, straining for air, as some form of oppressive, petrifying energy bore down upon her.

What was this? Nancy clung to the edge of the fountain, panic again rising in her. She had thought she was safe by this magical fountain, but now she knew she was wrong.

“Take me to him,” the figure hissed when she got closer. “Take me to my gargoyle!”
