Middle school teacher and amateur historian, Joe Staunch, likes everyone in smalltown, Herd, Montana. Except for Abby Whit. He can’t quite pinpoint what annoys him so much, besides the unnerving feeling she is lying to him and everyone in their close-knit community.
Food truck owner, Abby Whit has a secret. The descendant of the infamous Whittier family, she never meant to settle in town under an alias, but she can’t imagine living anywhere else. Time is running out to claim her property, and she is unsure how to do so without upsetting everyone and ruining her life.
How does she come clean without destroying her newfound love? And can love survive a lie?
Excerpt:
Abby glared, her green eyes glittering like emeralds. “Just looking for the positive.”
Joe liked her slightly annoyed and feisty. Playing the victim didn’t suit her. And she had a point. He spent too much time focused on the worst outcomes. He had a tendency to predict his own demise. Instead of the positives of a self-fulfilling prophecy, he carefully plotted his own doom. He needed to look at his life from a different perspective. She was good at reminding him about that. “I’d be a lot happier if I followed your lead.”
“Glad to hear it.” She lifted the corner of her mouth in a tilted grin.
He stared at her lips. She twisted her mouth to create the most fascinating shapes to express every emotion. Anger, frustration, and amusement were the three he’d witnessed the most. What else could she do?
She darted her tongue along her lower lip.
He flexed his hand at his side, fighting the itch to reach for her, pull her close, and do something inopportune like trace her mouth with his tongue.
The wind blew past and knocked her cap off her head. Without waiting, he raced after it and grabbed the hat in a couple yards. He returned with the prize, and she accepted, stuffing the cap back on her head with short, jerky motions.
