Excerpt:
He shook his head. “I think if there’s any man in your life, it should be me.”
She blinked at the shocking words. He’d already said he didn’t feel that way about her.
“What are you saying?”
He set his bottle on the nearby table, then took hers out of her hand and set it down next. “I mean, you and me.”
The words didn’t sound real. She had to be imagining this. It was too perfect. Too wonderful. Maybe she hadn’t imagined seeing all those longing glances in the photos. Noah was the kind of brother who would have stepped aside, after all, no matter how he felt about Twyla.
“You and me? You and me. Y-you?” She stammered. “But you said—”
“Don’t listen to me, or anything else I said that night. I lied to you because I was terrified. But look, after being forced to go through that album tonight, I’m reminded of how much you loved Will. It’s in every photo we took. And that’s okay, I get it. I would have never interfered with that. But a lot of time has passed. Tonight, I thought maybe, just maybe, now there’s a chance for you and me—”
She didn’t let him finish the sentence but met his tender gaze. Simply the thought that Noah saw himself as second best, even with her, made her ache.
Slowly, she slid her hand down the slight scrape of razor stubble on his cheek.
“I did love Will. But I never loved him the way I love you.”
