GENRE: Sci-Fi
BLURB:
Lonely Regency romance writer travels to the future, meets her fans, dips into a pearly swimming pool, and falls for its owner. Can she ever go home again…
If Jane Austen’s novels had never ever existed, would we have rom-com movies and women’s fiction? But the young writer is discouraged by a publisher’s rejection and ready to give up writing. And an unwelcome marriage proposal she has rashly accepted spells her doom.
Someone must save history and Jane Austen! When a stranger calls and claims to be an interested publisher, a desperate Jane agrees to go with him to his office. That office turns out to be in the future. And it's not an office, but a bookstore in southern California in 2024 where fans of Jane Austen gather every month to discuss her works.
Jane greets the Jane Austen Superfan Club, only to find that superfans can be super picky. Discouraged by their critiques, Jane wants different adventures. Even deadly, dangerous ones. And oh, yes! Romantic ones.
Her “publisher” had hoped to inspire Jane’s writing by showing her a book club devoted to her writing. But when she meets a tall, handsome superfan, Jane decides to chart her own course. She disappears with her new friend, and history may have to save itself …
EXCERPT:
“You will continue to hold my arm,” he said, “and I will speak some words. Then we will find ourselves in another world.”
“Will it hurt in any way?”
“Not a hair on your head will be disarranged. I hope you’re willing to see unusual things.”
“If I weren’t interested in the unusual, I would never write stories.“
Mr. St. James smiled. “Anytime you wish to leave, simply say so and I will bring you back.”
“I am ready.” She emphasized it with a jut of her chin.
“The world you’re about to enter has grown noisier, brighter, faster, and much more populous. Place your hand on top of my forearm, if you would.“
She complied but couldn’t hide her trembling. It shot through her, from her toes to her head in a liquid jolt.
At first, she was jostled. For a few moments, she felt as if on a pony that clopped suddenly sideways. And chilly, as if she’d forgotten her coat and shawl. A breeze came with a thistle of rain.
She looked up and blinked. “Is the sky always this blue?”
It was a piercing blue, like the finest summer day at the seaside. The wall of sound resolved into a chatter of voices and mechanical noises.
He nodded. Jane still held his arm.
“Mr. St. James, are we in your future?”
“Yes. Here, you must call me by my first name. I’m George. Is it all right if I call you Jane?”
“If that is your custom … George,” she said and dropped her hold on his arm.
But looking around, she reached for it again. The pavements thronged with people, most wearing no more clothes than if they were about to go into the ocean. Women with their arms exposed, as if in ball gowns, but their legs encased in trousers. Men wearing short pants like little boys. Were they near a beach?
