EXCERPT

“Wesley!” She tried to break free but couldn’t. “Let me go!”
“Denying it won’t change things. Be honest with yourself. Tell the truth. You feel something for me. You want me too.”
“Get off!” She snatched herself free. “You’re crazy, Wesley. I don’t know
what you’re up to, but this isn’t real.”
“Chanel, you and me are the realist thing in my life right now.” He moved closer to her. “I’m good at reading people, especially women, so you can’t lie to me. You want me just as much as I want you.” He touched her cheek. “And you’re gonna come to me. You’re gonna come to me because you can’t fight this anymore than I can.”
“Go to hell.” She pushed him and looked at the shocked expressions staring from their tables. “How could you embarrass me like this?”
“I’m not trying to embarrass you, but I’m sick of hiding my feelings—”
“Stay away from me, Wesley.” Chanel rushed out of the room. “Stay away!”
Of course, she knew Wesley wouldn’t quit. Quitting wasn’t in his nature. He wouldn’t be so successful if it was.
With him running behind her, Chanel flew up the steps of cabin 12 and unlocked the door. “Go away, Wesley!” She leapt inside and tried to close the door but he grabbed it. “Stop!”
“No.” He pulled on the door as she pushed it. “I won’t let you run away from me anymore. We need to talk, Chanel.” He shoved the door open, pushing her back. “Sweetheart, listen—”
“You won’t leave?” She got out her cellphone. “I’m calling the police.”
“Why? What are they gonna do?” He entered, kicking the door closed. “I own this damn place, remember?”
“Doesn’t mean you have a right to bust in here like this.” She ran behind the couch with the phone to her ear. “I don’t wanna talk to you. You embarrassed the hell out of me!”
“Who cares about those people?”
“I care!” She shook the phone. “See, this is what I mean, Wesley. You never think about how your actions affect others. You tricked me.”
“I didn’t trick you.” He walked to the coffee table. “Chanel, I’ve been holding my feelings in for months and I can’t do it anymore. Why do we have to?”
“Maybe because I don’t have feelings for you!” She marched from behind the couch. “You think of that?”
“One thing about you is you don’t lie, Chanel.” Sweat beads sprouted on top of his forehead. “So if you feel nothing for me then look me in the eye and say it.”
She trembled, the phone shaking in her hand.
“Tell me you don’t care about me, and I’ll leave you alone.”
She sucked in a breath and looked away.
“See?” His face brightened. “I know you’re scared because it’s been a while for you but it’s been a while for me too. We can take this journey together.”
“Are you insane? One moment you go from hating me to now you’re in love with me?” She scoffed. “And I’m supposed to believe that though your actions haven’t shown it?”
“I’ve shown it.” He squinted. “When we were together, working alone all those times. You knew how I felt. You’re too perceptive not to know.”
She sighed.
“When we’d talk about stuff other than business, it felt like I’ve known you my whole life and I trust you, Chanel. I don’t trust anyone else but Louis.” He smirked. “I barely trust myself.”
