by Colleen L Donnelly
GENRE: Historical Romance
BLURB:
Jim Turner writes crime but doesn’t live it. He respects his grandfather’s tales of heroes but doesn’t believe them. When his failing grandfather sends him to a remote peninsula to write the end of his own heroic love story, Jim includes a war criminal interview to maintain his edge.
Chastity is an anomaly, a misfit in pre-WWII culture as well as in Jim’s life. Her spritely charm and endearing features turn Jim’s world upside down, especially when she reveals his grandfather’s peninsula as the site of her upcoming wedding.
Do good journalists flee when their interviewee is murdered? Do heroes write fiancés out of another’s story and themselves in? “The End” become the hardest words for Jim to write.
EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT
Author's Note: Boy meets Girl. When danger creeps in.
“I’m Jim Turner,” I said to the eye peering from a barely opened motel room door I had been told to knock on. A seedy place far from the much nicer one Seth…the Times…had chosen for me. “I’m here to…”
“Shhh,” came a hiss from the inside as the eye roved from the right to the left, scouring the parking lot behind me. I couldn’t help myself and glanced over my shoulder. Whoever had led me here had driven away and was nowhere to be seen. “Show me some ID,” a husky voice whispered from behind the door.
I fumbled for my wallet, the only thing I was allowed to bring besides a pen and some paper—no satchel and no jacket, per Reed’s paranoia. Once I had the wallet opened, I held it close to the door. A man’s hand shot out and took it.
“Hey…”
“Shush,” he snapped. The eye reappeared and looked me up and down. “You fit the description I was given. Come in.”
The door opened enough for me to slither into a room that reeked with the stagnant fumes of body odor and cigarette smoke. I batted my eyes in the dark when the door was shut and bolted behind me. A shiver of panic crept up my back, and my throat refused to swallow.
“Can you see okay?” a husky whisper asked as rough hands patted my trouser pockets and legs. Looking for a weapon, no doubt. One I wished I had.
