Clean Win
by Kevin R. Doyle
GENRE: Mystery
BLURB:
Laura Mosby is like a lot of young women, working in a job she doesn't like, looking for a way out, and doing her best to enjoy her privacy. When she dies a violent death at the hands of an intruder, it's at first brushed off as a standard homicide. But when Lieutenant Santiago, the supervising detective, comes across evidence linking her death to a local politician, he begins to see the faint threads of a much nastier scheme. Desperate to shield his people from potential harm, he turns to Sam Quinton, full-time gym owner and part-time private investigator, to help solve Laura's murder and help the police department evade the wrath of City Hall.
EXCERPT:
Still no sound, no movement of any kind, and I began to wonder if the shadow I’d seen had just been some kid cutting through the yard.
Back to pondering as I continued to breathe slowly. If no one with a legitimate reason would be showing up here, then someone with an illegitimate one?
The ridiculous thought crossed my mind of the old cliché: the criminal returning to the scene of the crime. At first, I almost dismissed the idea as beyond stupid. Even if, for whatever reason, Laura Mosby’s murderer would come back here, why months later? For what possible reason?
And why at this moment?
What was new about the case that would warrant him or her showing up?
The answer popped into my head almost immediately, and I felt a cold feeling in the pit of my stomach.
At the same instant, I heard the slight, high creak of door hinges come from the kitchen area.
Alright then, it hadn’t been imagination, and it hadn’t been some kid cutting across the yard.
Someone had entered the house, like me doing their best to keep their presence secret.
And I could think of only one reason why someone would have done so at this particular point in time.
Obviously, Santiago hadn’t been as careful as he’d thought, and someone knew something about new information coming into the case.
And I had to clean up the mess.

My Review - 4 of 5 stars -
I enjoyed this book. I found the witty banter, sassy interactions, both personal and professional, gave this tale a more human or real feel. Sam Quinton was intelligent, mostly honest, and genuine. He could pull a fast one as well. This was a story worth reading, and I look forward to the next in the series.
